How much do fpga rtl developer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 7, 2026, the average hourly pay for fpga rtl developer in the United States is $47.25, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $25.48 and $61.30 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are FPGA RTL Developers?

FPGA RTL Developers are engineers who design, implement, and test digital circuits on Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) using Register Transfer Level (RTL) coding, typically in hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog. They are responsible for translating system requirements into efficient, reliable digital logic that can be programmed onto FPGA hardware. Their work is crucial in industries such as telecommunications, aerospace, automotive, and consumer electronics, where custom hardware solutions are needed for performance or flexibility.

What are some typical collaboration points between FPGA RTL Developers and other engineering teams?

FPGA RTL Developers frequently collaborate with hardware design, verification, and embedded software teams throughout the development process. They work closely with hardware engineers to ensure that the RTL code aligns with the overall system architecture and meets timing and performance requirements. Regular interaction with verification engineers is also essential to create and review testbenches and resolve any design bugs. This collaborative environment helps ensure a smooth integration of FPGA modules into larger systems and supports efficient project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an FPGA RTL Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an FPGA RTL Developer, you need a solid background in digital design, hardware description languages (such as VHDL or Verilog), and a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with FPGA development tools (like Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus), simulation environments, and experience with version control systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are important soft skills for this role. These skills ensure robust, efficient hardware solutions and smooth collaboration on complex design projects.

Job description

Ready to make connectivity from space universally accessible, secure and actionable? Then you've come to the right place!
E-Space is bridging Earth and space to enable hyper-scaled deployments of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and services. We are building a highly-advanced low Earth orbit (LEO) space system that will fundamentally change the design, economics, manufacturing and service delivery associated with traditional satellite and terrestrial IoT systems.
We're intentional, we're unapologetically curious and we're 100% committed to innovate space-based communications and deliver actionable intelligence that will expand global economies, protect space and our planet and enhance our overall quality of life.
The Staff Satellite FPGA Engineer - Signal Processing will participate in all aspects of the development and test of avionics FPGA RTL designs for E-Space satellites. The ideal candidate has 10+ years of experience in FPGA firmware development including RTL design, simulations, analysis, verification, and HW testing.
This position will report to the Senior Director, Product & Systems Integration Semiconductor Development team. This position is based in our Saratoga, CA office.
What you will do:

  • The functions of this role include providing strategic direction and implementation in the following areas:
  • Own FPGA RTLdevelopmentin either SystemVerilog or VHDL from blank sheet to flight.
  • Develop FPGA logical architecture and requirements in collaboration with other engineering disciplines including defining HW/SW interfaces between fabric logic and processing subsystems.
  • Implement a digital channelizer beamformer from bit-accurate reference models
  • Drive part selection and define PCB architecture
  • Perform design verification including simulations, test benches, timing analysis, and hardware testing.
  • Lead design reviews, demonstrate requirement traceability, and create documentation for FPGA operation and interfacing with other SW and FPGA systems.
  • Develop and participate in test campaigns ranging from unit level manual tests, unit automated tests, and system level tests.
What you bring to this role:
  • 10+ years of experience in FPGA RTL architecture, development, verification, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Skilled at SystemVerilog or VHDL.
