What is an FPGA RFSoC?

FPGA RFSoCs, or Field Programmable Gate Array Radio Frequency System-on-Chip devices, are integrated circuits that combine programmable logic (FPGA) with high-speed analog-to-digital converters (ADC) and digital-to-analog converters (DAC) on a single chip. These devices are designed to handle radio frequency (RF) signal processing directly within the FPGA, reducing system complexity and latency. RFSoCs are commonly used in wireless communications, radar, and other applications that require high-performance, real-time processing of RF signals. They offer flexibility for rapid prototyping and deployment of complex RF systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an FPGA RFSoC engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an FPGA RFSoC Engineer, you need a solid background in digital design, signal processing, and embedded systems, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or related fields. Proficiency with hardware description languages (such as VHDL or Verilog), Xilinx RFSoC development tools, and simulation software is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork set standout professionals apart in this role. These skills and qualities ensure the development of robust, high-performance FPGA solutions for demanding radio-frequency applications.

Do FPGA RFSOC jobs pay well?

FPGA RFSOC jobs typically offer competitive salaries due to the specialized skills required in digital design, signal processing, and FPGA development. Compensation varies based on experience, location, and industry, with roles often including benefits such as certifications and access to advanced tools. Overall, these positions tend to pay above average compared to general engineering roles.

What are some common challenges faced when working with RFSoC FPGAs in a development team?

Engineers working with RFSoC (Radio Frequency System-on-Chip) FPGAs often encounter challenges such as integrating high-speed analog and digital components, managing power consumption, and ensuring signal integrity. Collaboration is key, as projects typically require close coordination between hardware, firmware, and software teams to optimize overall system performance. Additionally, staying updated with evolving toolchains and verification methodologies is crucial for successful project delivery and professional growth.

Job description

About the role

Muon Space seeks a talented Senior FPGA Engineer with RF DSP Expertise to join our High Performance Compute team. In this role, you will implement HDL for digital signal processing of RF systems on FPGAs, and design and optimize these algorithms. You'll work at the intersection of RF theory, DSP algorithm development, software defined radio (SDR), and high performance digital FPGA design to deliver high-performance wireless communication and RF sensing products. If you thrive on complex challenges in a dynamic startup environment and want to build the future of Earth observation, we want to hear from you.

Responsibilities
  • Implement and optimize DSP algorithms on FPGAs for real-time execution; support algorithm prototyping in Python and porting to ARM SoCs
  • Design, simulate, and implement DSP algorithms for RF applications (Communications, ESM, Radar, etc.)
  • Collaborate with RF hardware engineers on instrument bring-up, calibration routines, and system integration, and team up with other software departments
  • Author technical documentation, design specifications, and test reports
Qualifications
  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years of professional experience in FPGA development of RF DSP and translating prototype algorithms into FPGA implementations
  • Experience with general RF digital signal processing techniques in some of the following areas: spectrum monitoring, signal intelligence, modulation/demodulation, filtering, channel estimation, equalization, synchronization, AGC, DPD, etc.
  • Profound expertise in HDL (Verilog / System Verilog / VHDL) and FPGA system architecture and design flows
  • Ability to work with a distributed, interdisciplinary team (scientists, engineers, data support, etc.)
  • Familiarity with modern software development tooling and best practices
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in systems analysis, troubleshooting and design, with a strong understanding of the interplays between hardware and software
  • Experience working with a distributed team of developers across multiple groups and departments
  • Familiarity with Xilinx/AMD RFSoC or MPSoC
  • Proficiency in C/C++ or Rust for embedded/real-time systems
  • Experience with Python-based development and analysis
  • Familiarity with FPGA-based DSP techniques
    • DPD (Digital Predistortion), beamforming, MIMO, or radar signal processing
    • Communications: Modulation schemes (QAM, OFDM, FSK), channel coding, multirate signal processing, and adaptive filtering
    • RF concepts: mixers, PLLs, ADCs/DACs, IQ imbalance, frequency planning, link budgets
    • Calibration algorithms (DC offset, IQ correction, LO leakage)
  • Experience working on space-based applications
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines for embedded firmware
  • Proficient with version control (Git), debugging tools (JTAG, GDB), and lab instrumentation
What You'll Bring
  • A systems-level mindset that connects RF physics, DSP mathematics, and FPGA implementation
  • Strong analytical and debugging skills for solving RF/FPGA hardware bugs
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a cross-functional team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Salary

The salary range for this role is $138,000 - $190,000, plus a competitive equity grant and comprehensive benefits package. Final compensation will be determined based on skills, qualifications, experience, and geographic location as assessed during the interview process.Â
