As of Jun 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for foundry welder in the United States is $20.91, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.38 and $22.36 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Foundry Welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Foundry Welder, you need proficiency in welding techniques, metal fabrication, blueprint reading, and a high school diploma or vocational training in welding. Familiarity with welding equipment, safety protocols, and sometimes certifications like AWS (American Welding Society) are typically required. Attention to detail, physical stamina, and strong problem-solving skills help individuals excel in this physically demanding and precision-oriented role. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure safe, high-quality metalwork and efficient production in a foundry environment.

What is the difference between Foundry Welder vs Pipe Welder?

Work EnvironmentFoundries, heavy industrial settingsConstruction sites, industrial plants, pipelines
Industry UsageMetal casting, manufacturingOil & gas, water, and gas pipelines

Foundry Welders primarily work in foundries with cast metals, focusing on welding castings and molds. Pipe Welders, on the other hand, specialize in welding pipelines in construction and industrial settings. While both roles require similar certifications, their work environments and tasks differ significantly, making each role unique within the welding industry.

What are foundry welders?

Foundry welders are skilled tradespeople who specialize in joining metal components in foundries, primarily using various welding techniques such as arc, MIG, or TIG welding. They often work with cast metal parts, repairing defects or assembling complex metal structures as part of the foundry manufacturing process. Their role is crucial to ensuring the structural integrity and quality of cast products. Foundry welders also interpret technical drawings, follow safety protocols, and may handle tasks such as grinding, cutting, or finishing metal surfaces.

What are some common challenges faced by Foundry Welders and how can they be addressed?

Foundry Welders often work in environments with high temperatures, noise, and exposure to fumes, which can be physically demanding. Managing fatigue and maintaining safety protocols are ongoing challenges, especially when handling heavy materials or complex welds. To address these issues, it's important to use proper personal protective equipment (PPE), follow established safety standards, and take regular breaks. Teamwork and clear communication with other foundry workers and supervisors also help ensure projects are completed efficiently and safely.
