What is a founding full stack engineer?

A Founding Full Stack Engineer is an early, core technical team member at a startup who is responsible for building both the front-end and back-end of the company's product. This role goes beyond typical engineering, often involving product decisions, architecture design, and collaborating directly with the founders. Founding Full Stack Engineers help shape the company's culture, technical direction, and can have significant equity stake. Their work is crucial in taking the business from idea to launch, often in a fast-paced, resource-limited environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a founding full stack engineer?

To thrive as a Founding Full Stack Engineer, you need expertise in both front-end and back-end development, deep knowledge of programming languages like JavaScript, Python, or Ruby, and experience with scalable architectures, often backed by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with frameworks (React, Node.js, Django), version control systems (Git), cloud platforms (AWS, GCP), and DevOps practices is typically required. Strong problem-solving, initiative, adaptability, and excellent communication distinguish successful candidates, enabling effective collaboration in a startup environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for building robust products rapidly and influencing the company's technical direction from its early stages.

What is the difference between Founding Full Stack Engineer vs Full Stack Engineer?

AspectFounding Full Stack EngineerFull Stack Engineer

Founding Full Stack Engineers are key players in early-stage startups, often involved in building core products from scratch and shaping company technology. Full Stack Engineers work across various company sizes, focusing on developing and maintaining applications. The main difference lies in the startup environment and level of involvement in founding the company.

What unique challenges might a founding full stack engineer face when joining an early-stage startup?

As a Founding Full Stack Engineer at an early-stage startup, you'll often balance building core product features with setting up foundational technical infrastructure. This role typically requires wearing multiple hats, from architecting systems and writing code to making critical technology decisions and collaborating closely with non-technical founders. You may encounter challenges such as ambiguous requirements, shifting priorities, and limited resources, but you'll also have significant influence over the company's technical direction. The dynamic environment encourages rapid learning and offers accelerated career growth, particularly for those who thrive in fast-paced, collaborative settings.

Job description

Hi, thanks for checking out our job board!

If you're an entrepreneurial-minded builder who loves to work with great people to solve wicked problems that have a meaningful impact, read on to see if this position might be a good fit for you!

What we're doing

We are on a mission to eliminate bottlenecks and revolutionize the food and beverage CPG supply chain by developing innovative, all-in-one software that starts with the contract manufacturer.

Contract manufacturers and contract packagers (collectively, co-packers) are facilities that have extra production capacity and provide their services for a fee to customers (brands). Co-packers play a vital role in the trillion dollar U.S. Food and Beverage (F&B) Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) industry, providing a range of services to convert raw materials into finished goods. These facilities are responsible for blending, drying, baking, frying, forming, and milling raw materials into bottles, pouches, cans, and other packages for our favorite foods and drinks. They are vital businesses for all food and beverage brands, including the thousands of emerging food and beverage brands that lack the resources to handle manufacturing on their own.

We're building vertical B2B SaaS for F&B manufacturers to run all aspects of their daily operations from estimating costs and ordering raw materials to tracking inventory, managing communication with food and beverage brands, and automating production tasks. Our platform consolidates fragmented software systems and streamline workflows both internally within their business, and externally as they collaborate with their brand customers.

Who we are
Our founding team is no stranger to the complexities of the F&B industry. Our CEO Crawford launched coffee-focused beverage brands and began advising numerous CPG brands and manufacturers. He has lived and breathed the supply chain and manufacturing problems in the food and beverage industry as both an entrepreneur and investor. Our CTO Soheil has 6+ years of experience as a senior software engineer and tech lead at Amazon AWS and Google, across the full stack of software development and scaling and leading engineering teams.  And, we're not alone.

We've raised $1M from Bienville Capital and have a team of advisors ranging from industry veterans and consultants.

We believe that our team is our greatest competitive advantage and take pride in having a team of exceptional humans. As a team, we value integrity, customer obsession, bias for action, lean product development, ownership and accountability. If this sounds like you and you're excited by the idea of getting in at the ground level to be part of building the infrastructure that will power the future of the food and beverage industry, we would love to hear from you!

Who you are
We are building out our early engineering team with well-rounded, resourceful, full-stack engineers who want to create a product literally from the ground up. You are someone who loves building products that delights users. An ideal candidate for this role is not afraid to work on any part of the stack from infrastructure to front-end and is excited about the breadth of responsibility and autonomy. You are someone who people can depend on to get things done and take responsibility for your commitments. You love working alongside smart and talented people who are action oriented.

 You'll be responsible for
As a founding engineer, you will be working closely with our CTO and CEO to understand the product strategy and lead software development using lean and agile methodologies. You will be involved in all aspects of the software development process, architectural decisions, recruiting and building the organization in general. This is a unique opportunity for someone who likes to both dive deep on the technical side and zoom out to collaborate with the executive team on setting a strategic future.

You will work across the full stack, designing and implementing modular systems with the right balance of structure and flexibility, building solutions that enable positive user experiences and meet the business needs of our pilot and future customers.
Requirements

    • 5+ years of experience in architecting, developing, testing, and launching web apps end to end

    • Fast learner who is comfortable dealing with ambiguity and hard problems
    • Experience with software development best practices (Scrum, testing, lean development, SOLID principles, code reviews)
Bonus Points
    • Previous experience at a high-growth fast-paced startup
    • Entrepreneurial mindset (we encourage all employees to be future founders and this can be a great stepping stone towards that goal)
    • Experience with our tech stack: NextJS, React, Typescript, Tailwind CSS, Mantine UI, PostgreSQL, Prisma, Trpc API

Compensation + Benefits
    • Competitive cash compensation
    • Equity ownership at a fast-growing company
    • Remote work optional
