How does a founder product designer typically interact with engineering and business teams in an early-stage startup?

As a Founder Product Designer in an early-stage startup, you’ll closely collaborate with both engineering and business teams to translate product vision into tangible user experiences. You'll often participate in strategic discussions, prioritize feature development based on user feedback and business goals, and work hands-on with engineers to iterate quickly on prototypes and product releases. What is a founder product designer?

Founder Product Designers are professionals who play a dual role in startups or new ventures, acting both as the founder and the lead designer of a product. They are responsible for shaping the product vision, user experience, and design strategy from the ground up. This role requires a blend of entrepreneurial skills, creativity, and a deep understanding of user needs. Founder Product Designers often oversee everything from initial concept and prototyping to user testing and final product launch. Their unique position allows them to directly influence both the business and design aspects of a company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a founder product designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Founder Product Designer, you need a strong background in user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design, proficiency in prototyping, and a solid understanding of product strategy, often supported by a degree in design or related field. Expertise with design tools like Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite, and familiarity with agile product development frameworks are typically required. Vision, entrepreneurial mindset, strong communication, and collaboration skills help set exceptional candidates apart. These capabilities are crucial for creating innovative products that align with business goals and deliver real value to users in a startup environment.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

As a Product Designer at Regal, you’ll be charged with taking the complex task of building Voice AI agents and making it simple and intuitive for our users. You will also be joining at a pivotal moment in our history, as we invest in AI building AI and completely reimagine our user experience. This role reports into our VP of Product and is a part of a small design team.

You’ll partner directly with Product and Engineering in the triad, setting the bar for what great looks like and executing the redesign that carries Regal into an AI-first era. You'll go deep with our customers to understand their problems, rethink our information architecture from the ground up, and maintain and build the design system and patterns that let the whole company ship well-designed features fast.

If you have strong visual taste, sharp UX instincts, and a real point of view on how AI is changing the craft of design, this role is for you.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Shape the Vision for AI-First Design: Help define where Regal's product design goes as we move into an AI-first era. Partner with product and engineering to set the direction for how our experience should evolve, and rethink our information architecture so it truly meets the needs of an AI-driven product, rather than carrying over the old model.

Partner in the Triad: Work shoulder-to-shoulder with Product Managers and Engineers to develop designs that meet both customer and business needs. Serve as a thoughtful partner who holds a high bar for design and helps the team make the product decisions that are best for our customers.

Go Deep with Customers: Conduct qualitative user research and usability testing with our customers to understand the problems they have, how Regal solves them, and how they actually use the product, then translate those insights directly into your design work.

Build the System That Lets Anyone Build: Work closely with engineering to maintain Regal's design library and patterns, ensuring everything we build integrates seamlessly and remains maintainable in our code. Develop a design framework for our AI-driven development era so anyone can build features that work within our design system.

Level Up the Bar: Establish a strong working process with product and engineering so customer needs are always met, constraints are addressed, and the team ships a consistent motion of well-designed features. Serve as a leader within the product team and help level up our execution.

ABOUT YOU:

Strong Visual Taste: You can demonstrate through multiple portfolio projects that the UI work you produce is premium and thoughtful. You have an eye, and it shows up in everything you ship.

Sharp UX Instincts: You know how to design experiences that anticipate what the user needs. You balance product functionality against what's realistically designable, and you know how to design around your specific user domain.

AI-Native: You're AI-pilled and up to date on the latest AI tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Figma MCP), with a real perspective on how design is changing. You're excited to build patterns so anyone can build; you know how to build scaffolding to scale, and you have a POV on how design works for a chat-heavy interface like Copilot.

Proven at Scale: You can speak to at least 3 major design initiatives you executed at prior companies that addressed a large surface area with meaningful customer or business impact. Ideally, you've led two to three major face-lifts of different product surface areas.

A Great Product Teammate: You live up to what makes a great teammate on the Regal product team: you go deep on everything (both customer and product), operate with urgency, seek the truth about the best solution, communicate clearly, and lead naturally.

Benefits/Perks:
  • We care about your health!
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision plans - 80% covered by the company
  • Flexible PTO & 11 paid holidays/year
  • Subsidized ClassPass membership
  • We care about future you!
  • 401k Plan
  • Paid parental leave
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits
  • We care about connection!
  • In-office breakfast and snacks daily
  • Happy hours, team outings, & annual off-sites
  • Complete laptop workstation
  • & more to come!
All offers include a competitive equity package and some offers may additionally include a variable compensation component. Actual compensation is determined on an individualized basis taking into consideration factors such as the candidate's skills, location, qualifications, experience, and relevant education or training.
