Foundation Intern information

What is a foundation intern?

Foundation Interns are students or recent graduates who work for a foundation—an organization that supports charitable, educational, or philanthropic activities—on a temporary basis. Their responsibilities typically include assisting with grant research, project management, event coordination, and administrative tasks. The internship provides valuable exposure to nonprofit operations, fundraising, and community outreach. Foundation Interns gain hands-on experience and professional networking opportunities while contributing to the foundation's mission.

What do foundation interns do?

As a Foundation Intern, you can expect to support a variety of projects, such as assisting with fundraising campaigns, organizing events, conducting research on grant opportunities, and helping with donor communications. Interns often collaborate closely with program managers, development staff, and sometimes board members, gaining hands-on experience in the nonprofit sector. The role typically involves a mix of administrative tasks, project management, and stakeholder engagement, providing valuable exposure to how a foundation operates. This experience can serve as an excellent stepping stone for future roles in nonprofit management or philanthropy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a foundation intern?

To thrive as a Foundation Intern, you typically need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a background in nonprofit management or a related field. Familiarity with donor databases, fundraising platforms, and proficiency in Microsoft Office are often required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and a proactive attitude help interns collaborate effectively and contribute meaningfully to team projects. These skills ensure interns can support essential foundation operations, build relationships, and successfully manage multiple tasks in a nonprofit environment.
