What is a foundation inspection?

A foundation inspection is a thorough evaluation of a building's foundation to assess its structural integrity and identify any signs of damage, settling, or potential problems. Inspectors look for issues such as cracks, moisture intrusion, uneven settling, and other structural concerns that could impact the safety and stability of the property. The inspection helps homeowners and buyers understand the condition of the foundation and what repairs, if any, are needed to maintain the building’s safety and value.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a foundation inspector?

To thrive as a Foundation Inspector, you need knowledge of building codes, structural engineering principles, and construction practices, usually supported by relevant certifications or experience in construction or civil engineering. Familiarity with inspection tools, moisture meters, digital reporting software, and sometimes certification from organizations like the International Code Council (ICC) is typical. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help inspectors accurately assess issues and convey findings to clients or contractors. These skills are crucial for ensuring structural safety, regulatory compliance, and clear stakeholder communication during building projects.

What are some common challenges faced by foundation inspectors during on-site assessments?

Foundation inspectors often encounter challenges such as limited access to crawl spaces or basements, concealed damage hidden behind finishes, and difficult soil conditions that can hinder thorough evaluations. Weather conditions like heavy rain can also affect site accessibility and visibility of potential issues. Effective communication with property owners and construction teams is essential to address these challenges and ensure accurate, comprehensive reports. Inspectors must be detail-oriented and adaptable to overcome these obstacles and maintain high inspection standards.

What is the difference between Foundation Inspection vs Structural Inspection?

AspectFoundation InspectionStructural Inspection
CertificationsTypically requires foundation-specific certifications or general building inspector licensesRequires structural engineering or building inspector certifications
Work EnvironmentPrimarily on residential or commercial building sites focusing on foundation systemsBroader, including entire building structures, framing, and load-bearing elements
Industry UsageCommonly performed during new construction, repairs, or assessments of foundation issuesPerformed during construction, post-construction, or damage assessments of entire structures

Foundation Inspection focuses specifically on evaluating the integrity of a building's foundation, while Structural Inspection covers the overall structural system of a building. Both roles require similar certifications and often overlap in work environments, but Foundation Inspectors concentrate on foundation-specific issues, whereas Structural Inspectors assess the entire load-bearing framework.

How to become a foundation inspector?

To become a foundation inspector, typically one needs a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by relevant training or certification in building inspection or structural assessment. Gaining experience in construction or engineering and obtaining state-specific licensing or certification can enhance job prospects and credibility in the field.

What do they do in a foundation inspection?

A foundation inspection involves evaluating the structural integrity of a building's foundation by examining for cracks, settling, moisture issues, and other signs of damage. Inspectors often use tools like levels and moisture meters and may check for proper drainage and soil conditions to assess stability.

Our breadth of offerings across the entire semiconductor value chain helps our customers solve their most difficult yield, device performance, quality, and reliability issues. Onto Innovation strives to optimize customers' critical path of progress by making them smarter, faster and more efficient.

Job Summary & Responsibilities

About Onto Innovation

Onto Innovation is a semiconductor process control capital equipment company delivering advanced metrology, inspection, lithography, and process control software solutions. Our tools help the world's leading semiconductor manufacturers improve yield, device performance, and manufacturing efficiency.

About the Foundation Engineering Organization (FEO)

The Foundation Engineering Organization (FEO) develops the shared platforms, electrical and mechanical subsystems, software frameworks, and engineering tools that support all Onto Innovation products. FEO drives standardization, scalability, reliability, and engineering excellence across our product portfolio.

To expand our foundational electrical technology capabilities, FEO is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer specializing in triggering systems and PCBA design to support nextgeneration platform architectures and highperformance system timing.

Position Summary

The Electrical Engineer 3 - Triggering & PCBA Design will lead the design, development, and validation of highprecision triggering electronics and printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs) that serve as core components for Onto Innovation's capital equipment platforms. This engineer will design lowlatency, deterministic trigger architectures; integrate precision timing circuits; and develop robust PCBAs that ensure accurate system synchronization, motion coordination, sensor acquisition, and metrology performance.

This is a senior technical role requiring strong electrical design depth, systems integration experience, and the ability to collaborate across multiple engineering functions to drive foundational platform capability.

Key Responsibilities

Triggering Architecture Design

  • Design and implement highprecision, lowlatency electrical triggering circuits used across Onto platforms.
  • Develop deterministic timing architectures for synchronization of optics, motion, sensing, image acquisition, and metrology subsystems.
  • Define trigger interfaces, electrical standards, and timing specifications for crossproduct reuse.

PCBA Design & Development

  • Lead schematic design, PCB layout reviews, component selection, and design validation for triggerrelated and general-purpose platform PCBAs.
  • Ensure compliance with electrical performance requirements, EMI/EMC robustness, thermal constraints, and reliability specifications.
  • Collaborate with supply chain and manufacturing to ensure strong DFM/DFT outcomes and reliable build quality.

System Integration & Validation

  • Work with systems engineering to integrate trigger electronics into platform modules and systemlevel architectures.
  • Perform circuit bringup, debug, functional testing, and characterization of timing performance.
  • Lead rootcause investigations for electrical timing, jitter, sync instability, or triggering failures across product lines.

Standards, Documentation & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and maintain electrical triggering standards, best practices, and platform documentation.
  • Establish common trigger hardware and interface architectures that simplify adoption across product groups.
  • Identify and drive improvements in electrical timing accuracy, jitter performance, and system synchronization reliability.

Qualifications

Required

  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of electrical engineering experience in PCBA design, embedded electronics, timing circuits, or triggering systems.
  • Deep knowledge of timing circuits, signal integrity, jitter management, clock distribution, and lownoise analog/digital integration.
  • Proficiency with PCB design tools (Altium, OrCAD, Cadence) and lab instrumentation (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, signal generators).
  • Experience designing hardware for precision motion systems, highspeed sensors, metrology, or complex electromechanical systems.
  • Must be able to travel internationally to customer sites at least 20% of the time, with additional travel as business needs require.

Preferred

  • Experience in semiconductor capital equipment, robotics, or precision instrumentation.
  • Background in mixedsignal design and integration of analog frontends with digital control electronics.
  • Knowledge of reliability engineering (DFMEA, rootcause analysis, environmental/thermal testing).
  • Experience working with EMS partners and with manufacturing transfer processes.
