About the Role

Our client is a highly mission-driven, Alaska-based MGA with 45 years of experience serving agents, insureds, and carrier partners. They are seeking an experienced Commercial Underwriter to help grow the future of the organization โ€” bringing strong underwriting judgment, relationship-building skills, and a willingness to embrace AI, automation, and technology-driven innovation.

This role is ideal for someone with 4-6+ years of commercial insurance underwriting experience, preferably within an MGA or E&S environment, who can manage a meaningful book of business, support profitable growth, and contribute to a collaborative, forward-thinking team.

Licensing is preferred but not required, and while 3โ€“5 years of experience from a background in banking, legal, finance, or mortgage is a plus, what matters most is that the candidate is teachable and brings relatable, transferable skills. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented and thrives in a fast-paced environment, is coachable, adaptable, and able to multitask and pivot as needed. They must be comfortable with and enthusiastic about technology, mission-driven, and eager to grow into leadership. Must be receptive to constructive criticism. The client offers a fun team environment, incentives, and a clear path for growth.

What Youโ€™ll Do

Manage a commercial insurance book of approximately $2โ€“3 million in premium, with accountability for underwriting quality, profitability, responsiveness, and agency relationships.

  • Underwrite new and renewal commercial accounts in accordance with carrier guidelines and internal standards
  • Evaluate risk quality, exposures, pricing, coverage forms, loss history, and account profitability
  • Work with retail agents to obtain submissions, clarify exposures, negotiate terms, and deliver underwriting solutions
  • Manage a consistent flow of submissions, quotes, renewals, endorsements, and follow-upsBuild and maintain strong relationships with agents, carrier partners, and internal teammates
  • Handle complex commercial accounts with professionalism, responsiveness, and sound judgment
  • Collaborate with leadership on process improvements, AI tools, automation, and technology-driven workflows
  • Mentor and support underwriting assistants or less experienced team members as needed
Required Qualifications
  • 5โ€“10+ years of commercial insurance underwriting experience
  • Prior experience in an MGA, wholesale, E&S, carrier, or commercial underwriting environment
  • Strong commercial insurance knowledge: General Liability, Property, Commercial Auto, Inland Marine, Excess, or related lines
  • Experience managing a commercial book of business, ideally $2โ€“3M in premium or higher
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an Alaska insurance license
  • Excellent communication skills with agents, carrier partners, and internal teams
  • Strong attention to detail, underwriting discipline, and ability to document decisions clearly
  • Positive attitude toward AI, automation, and technology innovation
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with admitted and non-admitted markets
  • Underwriting experience in hospitality, habitational, contractors, lessorโ€™s risk, garage, or inland marine
  • Prior experience developing agency relationships or participating in broker/agent education
  • Experience mentoring junior underwriters or underwriting assistants
  • Strong comfort with rating platforms, management systems, and digital workflows
