What is a Fortran Contract?

A Fortran Contract job is a temporary or project-based position where a programmer specializes in Fortran, a programming language commonly used in scientific, engineering, and financial applications. These roles often involve maintaining, updating, or optimizing legacy Fortran code in industries like aerospace, research, and high-performance computing. Contractors typically work for a set duration and may be hired by companies needing expertise in numerical computing or simulations.

What do Fortran Contract professionals do?

Fortran Contract professionals commonly contribute to projects involving scientific computing, engineering simulations, financial modeling, or maintaining and upgrading large legacy codebases. Day-to-day tasks may include analyzing, debugging, and optimizing existing Fortran code, writing new modules, documenting changes, and collaborating closely with domain experts or other software developers. The work environment can range from remote individual contributions to being part of a multidisciplinary project team, depending on the employer and project scale. Contract professionals should be prepared for clear communication, meticulous documentation, and often working with long-standing, mission-critical software that requires both technical rigor and an understanding of the underlying business or scientific objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for a Fortran Contract?

To excel as a Fortran Contract professional, strong expertise in Fortran programming, understanding of legacy systems, and a degree in computer science or a related field are often required. Scientific Software Engineer

The Opportunity:

As a back-end developer, you know that a good site or system needs the right combination of clean code, APIs, analytics, and infrastructure to develop a user-focused solution. We're looking for an experienced back-end developer with the software engineering skills it takes to identify potential risks, contribute to solution development, and create efficient and effective systems for our clients.

As a back-end developer at Booz Allen, you'll use the latest architectural approaches and open-source frameworks and tools to deliver solutions. Using your software engineering experience, you'll work with the development team to create custom tools, systems, and sites with consistent performance and scalability.

In this role, you'll provide code management support for the different applications, develop regression testing protocols, ensure that the applications can build and run all supported tests on all supported platforms, maintain up to date documentation, develop and support release protocols, support hierarchical system development of the applications, and triage, investigate, and resolve bugs reported to the supported applications. You'll make a mission-forward impact as you further your skillset and career. Work with us as we shape systems for the better.

Join us. The world can't wait.

You Have:

  • 5+ years of experience implementing, maintaining, and supporting Agile software development and scientific DevOps workflows to modernize complex modeling or computational systems, including operational support for the weather forecasting applications

  • 5+ years of experience in software development using Python, C, C++, Fortran, shell scripting, or HPC programming environments such as MPI, OpenMP, or hybrid parallelization

  • Experience with Agile methodology, scientific software engineering, product development, workflow automation, and code management in largescale modeling applications

  • Experience developing and maintaining backend computational components, including data assimilation workflows, model coupling systems, performance benchmarking, HPC portability, and optimization for enterprisescale scientific applications

  • Experience designing solutions to complex computational or modeling problems within collaborative, crossfunctional scientific and engineering teams

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Suitability/Fitness determination based on client requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or 8+ years of software engineering experience in lieu of a degree

Nice If You Have:

  • Experience with Python, Fortran, C, C++, containerization such as Docker or Singularity, CI/CD pipelines such as GitHub Actions or GitLab CI/CD, and crossplatform HPC or cloud workflows

  • Experience writing, enhancing, or optimizing source code for scientific applications, numerical solvers, or coupled Earthsystem models

  • Experience gathering technical requirements, supporting workflow integration, and automating multistep systems such as UFS, HYCOM, MOM6, or JEDIbased applications

  • Experience using automated testing tools, scientific verification methods such as MMS, or performanceprofiling utilities to support robust system development

  • Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Computational Modeling, or a related field preferred; Doctorate degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Computational Modeling, or a related field a plus
