Fortinet Engineer information

What is a Fortinet Engineer?

A Fortinet Engineer is an IT professional who specializes in configuring, managing, and troubleshooting Fortinet security products, such as FortiGate firewalls, VPNs, and other network security solutions. They are responsible for ensuring the security and integrity of an organization's network infrastructure by implementing advanced security measures and monitoring for threats. Fortinet Engineers often work closely with IT teams to design security architectures, perform system updates, and respond to security incidents. Their expertise helps organizations comply with cybersecurity standards and protect sensitive data from cyber threats.

What are some common challenges faced by Fortinet engineers when managing large-scale network security deployments?

Fortinet Engineers working with large-scale network security deployments often encounter challenges such as integrating Fortinet solutions with existing heterogeneous network environments, maintaining consistent security policies across multiple locations, and ensuring high availability and minimal downtime during upgrades or troubleshooting. They must also stay current with frequent firmware updates and new threat intelligence to keep security measures effective. Strong collaboration with IT, network, and cybersecurity teams is essential to address these challenges efficiently while supporting business continuity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fortinet engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fortinet Engineer, you need a solid understanding of network security, firewall configuration, and troubleshooting, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with Fortinet products (such as FortiGate), experience using security information and event management (SIEM) systems, and certifications like NSE 4 or higher are highly valued. Strong analytical skills, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help you address complex security issues and support clients or teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring robust network protection and efficient resolution of security challenges.

Job description

Role Summary:

The Senior Network Engineer at Perfecta is responsible for maintaining the design and integrity of the corporate enterprise network, which also includes customer and program enclaves. Responsible for engineering, monitoring, and evolving a network between two satellite offices and the network hub located in a data center in northern Virginia, as well as data centers around the globe. Your network will meet corporate objectives and the demands of customers by dynamic design, configuration, monitoring, and maintenance of the network and network devices. Must be able to implement, monitor, and maintain an MPLS-based CAN, as well as WAN circuits. Must be able to learn and work with non-industry standard hardware, such as firewalls, and be able register public domains and set up routing for them. You will provide technical assistance to team members for networked equipment supporting our customers’ missions. You will make recommendations for network improvements, including cost estimates, and will mentor at least one junior network administrator with whom you will be working.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Must be able to manage an MPLS-based network and understand how to bond multiple WAN connections to provide fault-tolerance.

  • Work closely with the Director of IT and other senior management to advise on network aspects of in-house developed hardware, use of third-party network elements, advise customers on network topics, and work with security team members to design, deploy, and manage secure networks (LAN, CAN, WLAN, WAN)

  • Configure and install network devices and services: firewalls, routers, switches, VPN, load balancer, WAN.

  • Teach, coach, and guide junior network engineer(s)

  • Proactively monitor network performance and integrity, and troubleshoot network-related issues, including DNS

  • Create, oversee, and routinely test security measures, including authentication and disaster recovery measures.

  • Communicate with end users when necessary.

  • Maintain complete and comprehensive technical documentation of the network and customer network configurations.

  • Must be adept at creating and updating network topology diagrams using MS Visio

  • Continually recommend improvements to enhance network performance, capacity, reliability, and scalability while constantly looking for ways to lower costs

  • Install networks and equipment in OCONUS locations as directed by the project PM.

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Independent and self-disciplined engineer who thrives on operating without direct supervision and has great attention to detail.

  • Critical thinker who assesses risk and generates innovative solutions that are aligned with corporate mission and constraints.

  • Problem-solver capable of developing unorthodox networking solutions.

  • Working knowledge of and proficiency with network hardware, such as Cisco, Cisco Meraki, Dell switches, Netgate Firewalls, Juniper, Fortinet, Ubiquiti.

  • Expert knowledge and proficiency with networking concepts: IP management, LAN/CAN/WAN design, network maintenance & monitoring, troubleshooting

  • Comfortable with deploying changes to production environments to minimize downtime and risk of failure.

  • Possesses detailed knowledge and is familiar with network and routing protocols: MPLS, TCP/IP, BGP, VLANs, VPNs.

  • Working knowledge and proficiency with common network and Linux-based operating systems.

  • Familiar with access control models and network security.
