Position Type: Full-time, Non-Exempt

Job Summary
C. Martin Company is seeking a dependable and safety-focused Safety Inspector, Firing Desk / Engineering Technician II (Range Operations Safety) to support Range Operations and Maintenance activities at the Fort Novosel Gunnery Range Complex in Fort Novosel, AL.
This position supports live training operations for the Aviation Gunnery Range Complex and assists with range safety, communications, operational tracking, training area inspections, security checks, and range maintenance support. The Safety Inspector, Firing Desk will maintain daily operational records, enforce safety procedures, assist with emergency response actions, and support the safe and effective use of ranges and training areas.
The ideal candidate must be able to work flexible schedules, adapt to changing operational conditions, cross-train in related range support functions, and work productively with limited supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Safety Inspector, Firing Desk / Engineering Technician II will perform duties that include, but are not limited to:
  • Maintain radio communications for range operations and training activities.
  • Maintain daily journals and accurately track personnel movement, training activity, and work progress within the Fort Novosel Gunnery Range Complex.
  • Enforce government regulations and safety procedures for military and civilian agencies conducting training operations.
  • Assist with implementation of emergency action procedures, severe weather plans, and environmental protection procedures.
  • Assist with maintenance and inspection of training areas, ranges, facilities, and related support areas.
  • Support vegetation control and other range maintenance activities.
  • Operate a variety of ground maintenance equipment, including mowers, blowers, and related equipment.
  • Perform Range Complex, Training Area, and Maintenance Compound security checks.
  • Complete specialized training in methods and techniques used to protect secure areas, as required.
  • Support range safety inspections and operational readiness checks.
  • Assist with range operations duties and other mission support tasks as assigned.
  • Cross-train in related range support functions to ensure mission continuity.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support range operations and safety requirements.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements
  • Work conditions will vary, with most work performed outdoors.
  • Employee may be exposed to changing temperatures, weather conditions, and rugged field environments.
  • Typical work activities include:
    • 35% standing
    • 40% walking
    • 5% stooping
    • 10% reaching
    • 10% lifting
  • Must be able to lift up to and in excess of 35 pounds unassisted.
  • Must be able to work safely in a military range, training area, and field operations environment.
  • Must be willing and able to work shifts, rotating schedules, and changing operational hours as required.

Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office or FormFlow equivalent.
  • Ability to operate a variety of ground maintenance equipment, such as mowers, blowers, and related equipment.
  • Ability and willingness to work shifts and rotating schedules.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Firing Desk Certification is required within 30 days of hire.
  • Current Alabama Driver's License.
  • Must be insurable under the company's vehicle insurance policy while operating company, government, or rental vehicles during working hours and for the duration of employment.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a National Agency Check with Inquiries upon hire.
  • Must successfully pass background screening, including Social Security Number verification, driver record review, and criminal background investigation.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with Range Facility Management Support Systems.
  • Familiarity with military range-related terminology.
  • Familiarity with regulatory training procedures.
  • Prior experience supporting range operations, military training, safety inspection, or field operations.
  • Experience conducting security checks or protecting secure areas.
  • Experience supporting military, government, or contractor-operated range environments

This position requires the ability to support range safety and operational requirements in a fast-paced and changing environment.
