How much do formwork design jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 7, 2026, the average hourly pay for formwork design in the United States is $29.96, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.04 and $33.65 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Formwork Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Formwork Designer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering, proficiency in mathematics, and knowledge of construction methods, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Experience with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Revit) and familiarity with formwork systems and industry standards are highly valued. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication enable collaboration with project teams and the safe execution of designs. These abilities are crucial to ensure structural safety, cost efficiency, and successful project delivery in construction environments.

What is formwork design?

Formwork design involves creating temporary or permanent molds into which concrete is poured to form structural elements like walls, slabs, columns, and beams. The design must ensure stability, strength, and accuracy while being cost-effective and easy to assemble and dismantle. Formwork designers consider factors such as load-bearing capacity, concrete pressure, and safety standards to create efficient solutions for construction projects.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in formwork design, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in formwork design often encounter challenges such as coordinating with construction teams to meet project timelines, ensuring the structural safety of temporary works, and adapting designs to site-specific constraints. Effective communication with engineers, contractors, and on-site personnel is crucial for resolving conflicts and accommodating last-minute changes. Staying updated on the latest materials and design technologies can also help streamline the formwork process and improve efficiency, ultimately leading to safer and more cost-effective construction projects.

What is the difference between Formwork Design vs Formwork Installation?

AspectFormwork DesignFormwork Installation
Primary RoleCreating detailed plans and specifications for formwork structuresAssembling and installing formwork components on construction sites
Required SkillsDesign software proficiency, structural understanding, planningHands-on skills, understanding of formwork systems, physical labor
Work EnvironmentOffice-based, design studios, project planningConstruction sites, outdoor environments
CertificationsEngineering or technical certifications often preferredSafety training, construction certifications

Formwork Design focuses on planning and creating detailed formwork plans, while Formwork Installation involves physically assembling and installing these structures on-site. Both roles are essential in the construction process but require different skill sets and work environments.
