Job description

Position Title: Registered Nurse  
Position Number: 72771
Division: Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness (CEDEP)
Department: Tennessee Department of Health (TDH)
Location: East Tennessee
Position Duration: Through July 1, 2026 (with potential for extension)


Position Summary

Under general supervision, this position performs registered nursing duties of average difficulty across a variety of clinical and correctional settings. The role involves providing direct nursing care, administering vaccinations, and supporting public health initiatives aimed at preventing viral hepatitis among justice-involved populations.

The Registered Nurse will deliver patient-centered care in accordance with physician orders, established protocols, and nursing standards. Duties also include performing emergency responses, documenting care, and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure program success.


Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, coordinate, and conduct vaccination clinics within county jails across East Tennessee.

  • Educate justice-involved individuals on vaccine benefits and viral hepatitis prevention.

  • Safely store, transport, and administer vaccines according to CDC handling and safety guidelines.

  • Document patient information and complete both electronic and paper health records accurately.

  • Monitor and report on vaccination counts and educational outreach conducted at each clinic site.

  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, the Viral Hepatitis team, and external partners.

  • Maintain patient health files and legal records of service in compliance with privacy standards.

  • Provide nursing care and administer medications in alignment with physicians’ orders and protocols.

  • Evaluate medication effectiveness and monitor for side effects.

  • Perform Basic Life Support (BLS), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and emergency response procedures when necessary.


Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse.

  • Experience equivalent to one year of registered nursing OR

  • Education equivalent to a bachelor’s or graduate degree in nursing from an accredited college/university OR

  • A diploma in registered nursing from an accredited school of nursing.

Special Requirements:

  • Must hold an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Tennessee or possess a multistate privilege to practice under the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC).

  • Must hold a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.

This position is part of the Viral Hepatitis (VH) Program within TDH’s Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness (CEDEP) division.
The VH Program works to increase access to testing, diagnosis, and treatment to reduce viral hepatitis infections, morbidity, and mortality across Tennessee.

Program efforts focus on:

  1. Conducting disease surveillance, outbreak planning, and rapid response.

  2. Expanding access to prevention, vaccination, and treatment services.

  3. Building partnerships and developing policies to address hepatitis-related health disparities and improve public health outcomes statewide.
