Job description

Position Summary:
The Surveying Technician / Field Lead will serve as the senior member of a two-person field crew supporting USDA Forest Service boundary maintenance activities throughout western North Carolina. The position supports boundary painting/posting, corner maintenance and establishment, GPS/GNSS collection, and field documentation in accordance with Forest Service requirements and applicable North Carolina surveying standards.


Primary Responsibilities:

    • aint and post Forest Service/private boundary lines.
  • L
    • ocate, inspect, maintain, and document existing boundary corners.
  • A
    • ssist with establishment of required boundary corners.
  • C
    • omplete and update Forest Service corner cards.
  • O
    • perate GPS/GNSS equipment and collect required corner positions.
  • R
    • ecord latitude, longitude, tract number, and corner number.
  • U
    • se deeds, plats, corner cards, maps, KMZ files, and georeferenced field maps.

    • dentify monuments that are disturbed, obliterated, or lost and elevate them for supervisor/COR direction.

    • dentify and document potential encroachments.
  • M
    • aintain accurate field notes, photographs, GPS files, and supporting documentation.

    • oordinate daily activities with the Surveying Aide and supervisor.

    • afely perform sustained outdoor work in wooded, steep, and uneven terrain.


    Qualifications:

  • F
    • ield surveying, boundary surveying, or comparable land-survey support experience.

    • xperience operating GPS/GNSS equipment.
  • A
    • bility to read deeds, plats, maps, bearings/distances, and corner records.
  • E
    • xperience locating monuments and physical boundary evidence.
  • A
    • bility to lead a two-person field crew.
  • A
    • bility to hike and carry equipment through rugged terrain.
  • V
    • alid driver's license and ability to travel throughout western North Carolina.
