Position Summary:
Location: Fort McCoy is a United States Army installation on 60,000 acres between Sparta and Tomah, Wisconsin in Monroe County. Located about 30 miles east of La Crosse, Wisconsin, this region contains a mix of rolling hardwood ridges, jack pine and red pine plantations.
Organization: CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University. CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. Essential Job Duties:
  • Forest Inventory 75% - Conduct field data collection to update stand information impacted by timber sales or other management activities. The compartment and number of sample plots required will be determined in conjunction with the installation forester. Utilize iPads with Forest Metrix for data collection and analysis. Complete compartment stand exam forms and update compartment maps / attributes using ArcGIS Pro. Present data findings to Forester and recommend forest management practices harvest / thinning / TSI / planting for future planning.
  • Timber Marking / Timber Sale Preparations 20% - Assist forester in marking or cruising timber for sale to the public. Examples include but are not limited to red pine, white pine, oak intermediate cuts, and oak shelter wood harvests. Boundary lines and harvest trees will be marked according to the silviculture prescription provided by the installation forester. Conduct point and plot surveys.
  • Other duties as assigned (5%)

Conditions of Employment:
  • Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for all new hires).
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the U.S. by the proposed start date, CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
  • Valid driver's license, or the ability to obtain a valid driver's license prior to the proposed start date.
  • The position will also require bending, climbing, and lifting/carrying up to 30 pounds.

Supervision
This position does not require supervisory duties. Technicians will work with a project leader to carry out assigned tasks.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associates or BS in a forestry related field of higher education.
  • Experience conducting forest inventory or experience in forestry, natural resources, ecological fieldwork, vegetation surveys, or a related field.
  • Basic knowledge of tree identification and forest measurements; ability to accurately collect and record field data.
  • Experience with iPads, ESRI GIS Pro mapping software; use of standard forestry measurement equipment such as a diameter tape/calipers, measuring tape and clinometer or hypsometer; tree species identification skill set.
  • Experience with land navigation, aerial imagery reading and contour line interpretation.
  • Ability to work safely and independently in forested terrain and varying weather conditions;
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a group.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Direct experience in conducting forest inventories, timber cruises.
  • Experience and knowledge of central Wisconsin Timber Stands and associated tree species.
  • Experience with iPads, ESRI GIS Pro mapping software or Forest Metrix software data collection. Experience establishing and measuring forest inventory plots; familiarity with forest inventory sampling methods.
  • Off-road truck use.
  • Basic Wildfire & Prescribe Fire course (S-190/S-130/L-180).
