Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Forensics Engineer to investigate structural failures, perform condition assessments, and produce clear, defensible technical reports. The Forensics Engineer will support legal, insurance, and client needs by identifying root causes of building and component failures, applying knowledge of codes (IBC, IRC), and using analysis tools including AutoCAD and structural analysis methods. The role combines field investigation, laboratory review, engineering analysis, and persuasive technical writing to deliver conclusions and recommendations.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and conduct forensic investigations of building and structure failures, including on-site inspections, evidence collection, and documentation.
  • Perform structural failure analysis using engineering principles, drawings, calculations, and appropriate software; develop and review as-built and failure-mode models.
  • Conduct condition assessments and prepare prioritized repair and mitigation recommendations based on observed deficiencies and risk evaluation.
  • Use AutoCAD and other drafting tools to create and revise drawings, site sketches, and illustrative figures for reports and exhibits.
  • Apply codes and standards (IBC, IRC, and other applicable local codes) to assess code compliance and identify code-related factors contributing to failures.
  • Perform root cause analysis to determine contributing factors and sequence of events leading to failure; clearly separate likely causes from hypotheses requiring further investigation.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and technically defensible investigation reports, repair specifications, and expert opinions suitable for clients, attorneys, and regulatory agencies.
  • Provide expert testimony and support for litigation, arbitration, and insurance claims, including preparation of exhibits and deposition/testimony assistance.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (materials testing labs, geotechnical engineers, contractors, and insurance adjusters) to gather data and validate findings.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians in field investigation techniques, report writing, and professional best practices.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering or related engineering degree; advanced degree preferred.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required; Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or in-progress.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in forensic engineering, structural failure analysis, or related investigative roles.
  • Proven experience in technical report writing and delivering clear, well-documented investigation reports and expert opinions.
  • Hands-on experience with AutoCAD and familiarity with engineering analysis software and office productivity tools.
  • Strong knowledge of International Building Code (IBC), International Residential Code (IRC), and building code application in forensic evaluations.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting condition assessments, field inspections, and coordinating materials testing.
  • Proficiency in root cause analysis methodologies and the ability to distinguish between proximate and contributing causes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience providing expert testimony or courtroom support.
  • Strong attention to detail, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to manage multiple investigations and deadlines.
