Job description

The City of Wichita is NOT an E-Verify Employer. The Social Work Intern position with the Housing Department offers a unique opportunity to provide critical housing stability services to Wichita residents while working under the mentorship of a Licensed Social Worker (LMSW or LSCSW).

This role allows you to apply your academic knowledge to real-world challenges, helping residents meet their social, emotional, and economic needs through counseling, consulting, and referrals. As part of the Housing Department team, you'll engage in meaningful case management work, collaborating with community partners like the Wichita Police Department's Homeless Outreach Team and other service agencies. Your role will not only enhance your professional development but also empower you to contribute to solutions that make a real difference in people's lives.

This internship provides hands-on experience that complements academic learning, making it an ideal practicum placement for students eager to refine their skills in housing stability services. You'll gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing vulnerable populations and learn effective strategies to address these needs, setting a strong foundation for your career in social work. THIS IS A LIMITED PART-TIME POSITION Exact Shift will be determined at the time of hire with no more than 20 hours per week.

Bargaining Unit: No Union Representation **Posting may come down at any time** Examples of Work Performed Provide Case Management and coordinates services. Perform intern-level case management and administrative work assigned by the department. Determines eligibility of applicants for HCV services.

Counsels applicants to identify and address barriers to housing. Counsels applicants to match available services to individual needs. Collaborates with the WPD Homeless Outreach Team and other homeless service agencies.

Completion of work assignments may require operation of a vehicle. These examples are not intended to be all-inclusive. Other related duties may be assigned as needed.

Requirements of Work Level of knowledge appropriate to the work being assigned. Ability to use a computer to access, interpret and record information Ability to lean and reach as needed to read and interpret plans and specifications from a print that may be as large as 36 by 48 inches with information printed as small as 20 characters per inch May require ability to research, analyze, summarize and report findings May require ability to work outdoors in inclement weather to identify individuals in need May require ability to tolerate airborne nuisances associated with open grounds, construction and windy conditions May require ability to cover uneven terrain, go up and down stairs, and otherwise maneuver around construction sites Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations, and/or the public Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing Ability to safely perform the physical requirements for the specific internship assignment May require ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas Driver's License. An employee will not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Experience and Training Required Experience and Training Must be currently enrolled in an accredited bachelor's or master's degree program in social work. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship. Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of a criminal record check.
