Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?

Risk Control operates a state-of-the-art Forensic Investigation and Analytical Laboratory that contributes to the success of Travelers' Underwriting, Claim, and the Risk Control Field organizations. The forensic team and fully accredited Analytical Laboratory both provide scientific, engineering, and investigative support while the laboratory also helps customers assess employee exposures to potentially harmful environments and to prevent occupational illnesses. As a Forensic Specialist II, you will work as a subject matter expert to preserve, extract, and analyze evidence in a forensically sound manner to deliver optimal claim outcomes. Your analysis and investigation will ensure that claim decisions are supported by accurate, detailed, and objective findings.

What Will You Do?

  • Support the strategic delivery of optimal claim outcomes in partnership with claim center or product line leadership.
  • Travel to loss scenes to manage and direct the investigative team and ensure that evidence collection and preservation, witness interviews, and scene analysis are completed in accordance with internal and external forensic best practices.
  • Prepare verbal and written reports, conduct research, and provide technical advice and consultation to support the functions of Risk Control, Claims Services, Legal, and Underwriting, tailored to the intended audience and subject matter.
  • Provide testimony in legal proceedings including depositions, trial, mediations, and arbitration.
  • Maintain knowledge and skills in area of expertise by attending conferences, reviewing scientific journals and participating in specific industry standards organizations such as NFPA, ACS, ASME, etc.
  • Mentor and coach less experienced team members.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, or related field.
  • Five years of experience in one or more of the following areas: fire science, failure analysis, product liability, code evaluation, accident reconstruction, analytical chemistry and/or other forensic science or engineering fields.
  • Understanding of the proper elements of forensic investigation including proper documentation, rules of evidence, scene and lab safety and other internal procedures and policies.
  • Understanding of the applicable codes, industry standards, and laboratory examination and analysis protocols that may be required during an investigation.
  • Comprehensive understanding of insurance principles, policies, and procedures, as well as the various stages involved in the claims process.
  • Verbal and written communication skills to quickly establish credibility and rapport with clients and business partners.
  • Critical thinking and influencing skills to manage a collaborative environment both internally and externally.

What is a Must Have?

  • Four years of experience in engineering analysis, failure analysis, or scientific problem solving.
  • Valid driver's license.
