SENIOR PLANNING & SCHEDULING MANAGER

The Senior Planning & Scheduling Manager leads planning and scheduling efforts for complex commercial construction projects from preconstruction through closeout. Working closely with project managers, superintendents, preconstruction teams, owners, and trade partners, this role develops, maintains, and analyzes critical path (CPM) schedules using Primavera P6, provides schedule risk and delay analysis, supports project controls, and serves as the organization's scheduling subject matter expert. The position champions scheduling standards, Lean planning practices, and continuous improvement while mentoring project teams and supporting successful project delivery.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field; equivalent experience may substitute.
  • 10+ years of commercial construction scheduling experience.
  • Advanced Primavera P6 proficiency.
  • Strong knowledge of CPM scheduling, construction sequencing, project delivery methods, and project controls.
  • Experience developing and maintaining resource- and cost-loaded schedules.
  • Experience performing schedule updates, forecasting, and progress analysis.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.

Preferred:

  • Master's degree or AACE Planning & Scheduling Professional (PSP).
  • Healthcare and/or federal project experience.
  • Experience with forensic scheduling, Time Impact Analysis, Earned Value Management, and claims avoidance.
  • Knowledge of Lean construction, pull planning, and look-ahead planning.
  • Experience with 4D planning tools and scheduling databases.

Skills:

  • Advanced proficiency in Primavera P6 and Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel.
  • Strong knowledge of construction planning, scheduling, critical path methodologies, and project controls.
  • Experience developing and analyzing resource-loaded and cost-loaded schedules, schedule risk analysis, delay analysis, and claims avoidance techniques.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

Project Planning & Scheduling

  • Lead the development of comprehensive Critical Path Method (CPM) schedules throughout the project lifecycle, from preconstruction and design through commissioning, turnover, and closeout.
  • Partner with project leadership to establish work breakdown structures (WBS), define project phasing, determine logical sequencing, establish activity durations, identify procurement milestones, and develop execution strategies aligned with project objectives.
  • Develop baseline schedules that accurately reflect project scope, contractual requirements, owner milestones, labor strategies, and operational constraints while supporting successful project execution.
  • Integrate design, procurement, fabrication, permitting, commissioning, and construction activities into a single master project schedule.

    Schedule Controls & Schedule Management

  • Maintain, update, and analyze project schedules using Primavera P6 to accurately reflect project progress and forecast future performance.
  • Monitor critical path and near-critical activities, identify schedule variances, quantify impacts, and recommend mitigation and recovery strategies to maintain project objectives.
  • Develop recovery schedules and evaluate alternative sequencing options to minimize delays and improve schedule performance.
  • Perform schedule quality reviews to ensure compliance with McGough standards, contractual requirements, and industry best practices.

    Scheduling Systems & Risk Management

  • Conduct schedule risk assessments and proactively identify threats, opportunities, and schedule constraints affecting project delivery.
  • Perform delay analyses, Time Impact Analyses (TIA), forensic schedule evaluations, earned value assessments, and "what-if" scenario modeling to support project decision-making and contractual documentation.
  • Analyze productivity trends, float consumption, milestone performance, and schedule health metrics to provide actionable recommendations to project leadership.
  • Support claims avoidance and resolution through objective schedule analysis and comprehensive project documentation.

    Project Controls, Forecasting & Resource Planning

  • Develop and maintain resource-loaded and cost-loaded schedules to support project controls, forecasting, manpower planning, and executive reporting.
  • Collaborate with operations, estimating, procurement, and finance teams to align schedule updates with production forecasts, budget performance, and cash flow projections.
  • Support monthly forecasting, executive reporting, and project performance reviews by providing schedule-driven insights and trend analyses.
  • Monitor procurement, fabrication, and long-lead material activities to ensure alignment with construction milestones.

Lean Planning & Field Collaboration

  • Facilitate pull planning sessions, phase planning workshops, look-ahead planning meetings, and weekly coordination sessions with project teams, trade partners, and owners.
  • Collaborate closely with superintendents, project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to improve schedule reliability, remove workflow constraints, and optimize field execution.
  • Promote Lean Construction principles by improving workflow predictability, increasing planning reliability, and driving continuous schedule improvement throughout project execution.

Executive Reporting & Stakeholder Communication

  • Prepare executive-level schedule reports, dashboards, milestone updates, and visual presentations for owners, senior leadership, and project stakeholders.
  • Communicate schedule status, critical risks, emerging issues, and recovery plans through clear, data-driven reporting and presentations.
  • Serve as the scheduling subject matter expert during owner meetings, project reviews, executive briefings, and dispute resolution discussions.

Preconstruction & Business Development Support

  • Support preconstruction efforts by developing conceptual, proposal, and pursuit schedules that demonstrate project approach, sequencing, logistics, and milestone achievement.
  • Partner with estimating, operations, and business development teams to develop competitive schedule strategies that strengthen client proposals and interview presentations.
  • Participate in client interviews, pursuit meetings, and strategic planning sessions by presenting scheduling methodologies and execution strategies.

Scheduling Standards & Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain and enhance McGough scheduling standards, Primavera P6 databases, templates, coding structures, and scheduling procedures to ensure consistency across projects.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives by evaluating scheduling processes, implementing best practices, and leveraging technology to improve planning accuracy and reporting capabilities.
  • Ensure schedule compliance with contractual obligations, company standards, and industry scheduling methodologies.

Leadership, Mentorship & Organizational Development

  • Mentor schedulers, project managers, engineers, and field teams on scheduling principles, CPM methodology, Primavera P6, and McGough scheduling best practices.
  • Provide technical guidance and coaching to improve organizational scheduling capabilities and project controls maturity.
  • Foster a culture of proactive planning, accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning across project teams.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to project leadership by influencing planning strategies and promoting data-driven decision-making throughout the organization.

Other Responsibilities

  • Actively contribute as a member of the Scheduling team, collaborating to support shared goals and objectives
  • Participate in business development activities (client functions, design firm open houses, conferences, etc.)
  • Foster relationships with clients, architects, engineers, consultants and subcontractors

OFFICE AND TRAVEL

Works in regional office with periodic regional travel. In addition to regional meetings and some overnight travel may be required.
