About This Position

The Digital Forensics Lab Technician is responsible for conducting forensic data extractions from contraband cellular phones and mobile devices recovered within correctional facilities. This role supports investigative and intelligence operations by extracting, documenting, summarizing, and uploading digital evidence into authorized case management systems. Technicians are expected to maintain a high level of accuracy, chain-of-custody integrity, and productivity while supporting ongoing investigations and intelligence efforts.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities

  • Perform forensic data extractions on contraband cell phones and mobile devices.
  • Maintain an expected production rate of approximately 50 device extractions per week.
  • Analyze extracted data and prepare concise extraction summary reports for each device.
  • Upload extraction reports and associated documentation into Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) case management systems.
  • Ensure proper evidence handling and adherence to established forensic procedures.
  • Document extraction activities and maintain accurate records of forensic examinations.
  • Support investigative personnel by providing timely and accurate digital evidence reports.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of sensitive investigative information.
  • Comply with all applicable policies, procedures, and standards related to digital forensics operations.
  • Produce accurate extraction summary reports for each device processed.
  • Ensure timely upload of forensic reports into designated ADOC systems.
  • Maintain compliance with forensic best practices and evidence handling standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • IACIS Certified Mobile Device Examiner (ICMDE), and/or National Computer Forensics Institute (NCFI) Mobile Device Examiner (MDE).
  • Experience conducting mobile device forensic examinations and data extractions.
  • Understanding of mobile device operating systems, digital evidence handling, and forensic methodologies.
  • Ability to maintain evidence integrity and chain of custody requirements.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and documentation skills.
  • Prior experience supporting law enforcement, corrections, intelligence, or criminal investigations.
  • Experience with commercial mobile device forensic tools and software.
  • Familiarity with correctional intelligence operations and investigative case management systems.
  • Digital forensic examination techniques.
  • Mobile device extraction and evidence preservation.
  • Technical report writing and documentation.
