Forage Research information
What is forage research?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Forage Researcher, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Forage Research vs Forage Technician?
| Aspect | Forage Research | Forage Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Bachelor's degree in agriculture, plant science, or related field; research experience | Associate's or bachelor's degree; technical training in forage management |
| Work Environment | Laboratories, research farms, field trials | Fieldwork, farm settings, crop sampling |
| Employer & Industry | Research institutions, universities, agricultural companies | Farming operations, agricultural service providers |
| Search & Comparison Intent | Research roles, scientific work, crop development | Practical forage management, fieldwork |
Forage Research involves conducting scientific studies to improve forage crops, requiring higher education and research skills. In contrast, Forage Technicians focus on fieldwork and crop management, often with technical training. Both roles are essential in agriculture but differ in scope, environment, and responsibilities.
What are some common challenges faced by professionals in forage research, and how can they be addressed?

This is a 12-month tenure-accruing position that will be 40% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station) and 60% extension (Florida Cooperative Extension Service), available at the Range Cattle Research and Education Center (RCREC), Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. Tenure will accrue in the Soil, Water, and Ecosystem Sciences Department.
The faculty member will develop efficient and economical land use and nutrient management practices to improve forage growth and quality for beef and dairy systems in central and south Florida. Research responsibilities include field and laboratory studies on nutrient requirements of forage crops grown for hay or in multiforage grazing systems, and establishing relationships among forage nutrient needs, soil tests, and plant tissue analyses aligned with the 4Rs of fertilizer management. Additional research may address nutrient cycling, soil health, and minimizing nutrient losses, as well as integrating AI and/or precision agriculture. The position requires close collaboration with hydrology and water quality, agronomy, and animal science faculty at RCREC and other UF/IFAS units, as well as engagement with stakeholders such as the Florida Cattlemen's Association, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Office of Agricultural Water Policy, and Water Management Districts to ensure programs align with industry priorities. About University of Florida
Sourced by ZipRecruiter
The University of Florida is one of the top ranked public universities in the United States (ranked top 5 amongst public universities in 2023 US news and world report). It is one of only a few comprehensive universities, having medical, veterinary, dental, nursing, public health, and engineering disciplines all co-localized on the same, contiguous campus to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration. Gainesville is located in the northern region of Florida, within 1-1.5 hours of each coast, and just 1.5-2 hours to Orlando and Tampa. It is a small to medium-sized city with a low cost of living, excellent public and private schools, and southern hospitality. While Gainesville is widely recognized as the home of the Gators, it is quickly becoming known as a center for innovation and a place with a lifestyle that's comfortable for families, yet attractive for young professionals.
