Summary
This position is located withSports and Fitness on Fort Wainwright, AK.

  • Performs both daily and annual inspections and maintenance of the refrigeration system's specialized compressor, water purification, and refrigeration-system equipment.
  • Operates Zamboni Ice Resurfacing Machine and is responsible for scheduling annual maintenance and services.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of the Sports program's softball, soccer, and football fields, to include the development and maintenance of specialized athletic turf and other related field surfaces.
  • Coordinates with supervisor for ordering all required supplies/equipment required to maintain indoor and outdoor operations.

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs.
  • Must be able to work predominantly in extreme cold conditions.
  • May go from cold to warm environments on a rotating and continuous basis.
  • Must be able to operate and use the various safety and other electronic and automated equipment involved in providing for the well-being of guests as well as the protection and safety of these guests, other employees and government property.
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license.
  • The work requires frequent lifting of equipment and supplies weighing 50 pounds or more.
  • The work requires continual standing, bending, stretching, and walking.
  • Work is performed both inside and outside in all types of weather.
  • Work in the ice rink is approximately 40-45 degree.
  • Works on all types of surfaces (ice, snow, grass, dirt, and cement).
  • Incumbent is exposed to dirt, dust, smoke, oil, gas/diesel, field chalk, grass seed, and fertilizers, so the work is usually dusty, dirty, and greasy.
  • Is frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, bruises, burns and stains to clothing.
  • Subject to injuries as a result of driving accidents.
  • Must be able to work all shifts (morning, evening and weekends).

Qualifications
Resumes must be two pages (or less). Resumes should clearly demonstrate the applicant's relevant experience, skills, knowledge and abilities as they pertain to this position.
A qualified candidate must possess the following:
  • Ability to operate a Zamboni Ice Resurfacer or other large vehicle up to one ton to accomplish safe starts, stops, backing, and general safe driving operations.
  • Ability to plan and lay out work.
  • Skill and knowledge at installing ice rink.
  • Skill in startup, shut down and daily operation of ice rink compressors.
  • Ability to accurately document system status, which must be recorded on a daily basis year-round, and to interpret the meaning of the readings to enable appropriate operation, care and maintenance of this system.
  • Skill in establishing and marking athletic fields.
  • Skill and ability to use and maintain the appropriate tools of the trade.
  • Knowledgeable in the principles and techniques required to develop and maintain specialized athletic turf and other related athletic field surfaces, particularly in an arctic environment.
  • Must be able to identify system faults/failures and take the corrective measures to ensure safe, efficient operation of the ice rink.
  • Possess knowledge of basic fitness equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Must possess good written and verbal communication skills.

Allowances and Differentials
  • This job falls under the Federal Wage Schedule (FWS) pay system. FWS employees earn overtime pay for working more than 8 hours in a day or more than 40 hours in a week whichever gives the employee more benefit. Regular full-time, regular part-time, and regularly scheduled flexible employees may receive Sunday premium pay for working on Sundays. Employees may also be eligible to receive extra pay if the majority of their scheduled hours falls after 3:00 PM.
  • Non-foreign overseas allowances, cost of living (COLA), and differentials will not be paid, contingent upon eligibility.
