Truck Helper

Salary Range $14.00 - $14.00 Hourly Position Type Full Time Regular Job Shift Any Education Level N/A Travel Percentage Minimal Category Store

Schedule/Hours: Monday to Saturday 40 hours week.

This position is responsible for:

Assists in picking-up donations by riding in a Salvation Army truck and lifting, carrying, and/or hauling donations into the truck and unloading the same at the warehouse/store; assists in navigating for the Truck Driver; ensures the accountability, security, and safety of the donations when in route; assists in maintaining the vehicle in proper working order and in compliance with established standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Rides in a Salvation Army truck on a scheduled route in order to pick-up donated items; assists in navigating driver to destinations by reading a map and/or hand-written directions.
  • Inspects donated items briefly to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures; explains policy to customers regarding the types of items that can be accepted.
  • Lifts, carries, and/or hauls donations into truck; packs items in truck in a manner that maximizes use of space, protects items from damage, and ensures safety.
  • Prepares donation receipts for customers; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same.
  • Maintains good relationship with donors to promote a favorable image of The Salvation Army.
  • Unloads donations from truck upon arrival at warehouse; distributes items to appropriate locations in the warehouse.
  • Loads truck of items to be taken to the dump.
  • Delivers appliances and furniture purchased by customers.
  • Performs routine maintenance of the truck; checks fluid levels on a regular basis; coordinates and may participate in repair work as needed.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.
  • Ability to read and follow a map and/or hand-written directions.
  • Ability to perform strenuous, heavy work involving the lifting and carrying of heavy objects.
  • Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.
  • Work requires riding in a vehicle daily with exposure to the outdoors where there are physical discomforts associated with changes in weather such as rain, cold, snow, heat or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
