Job description

Food Science Product Development Technician

Location: Irving, Texas (Onsite)

Duration: 12-month contract to start with strong potential for extension and/or conversion


Our client, a global leader in the convenience retail industry, is seeking a detail-oriented Food Science Product Development Technician to support product development, quality assurance, and food safety initiatives. This role is responsible for assisting with recipe development, maintaining food safety and quality standards, developing standard operating procedures, coordinating product ordering, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure successful product execution. The ideal candidate is highly organized, adaptable, and passionate about the food industry.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Product Developers with product evaluations, recipe execution, product cuttings, presentations, cooking procedures, and process analysis.
  • Evaluate plant trials and first production runs (BME analysis) against established product specifications and analyze results to support commercialization.
  • Collect, document, and maintain accurate product evaluation and production run data in accordance with project and category-specific requirements.
  • Provide recommendations to Product Developers based on product testing, operational observations, equipment performance, and process improvements.
  • Develop, validate, and optimize oven settings for the Hot Foods category, including rapid cook ovens.
  • Prepare, coordinate, and support sensory panels by preparing products, organizing tastings, and assisting with panel execution.
  • Maintain test kitchen and product development areas, including Hot Foods, Grill, and Restaurant platforms, ensuring coolers, freezers, and dry storage areas remain organized, properly labeled, dated, and compliant with cleanliness standards.
  • Assist with product inventory management, cleanout procedures, and product donation protocols.
  • Package and ship products for photography sessions, vendor evaluations, and other business needs.
  • Support robustness testing, shelf-life studies, and analytical testing to evaluate product performance and quality.
  • Assist with internal product sampling events, including NBLC sessions, Executive Committee tastings, Board tours, and other company presentations.
  • Support additional test kitchen operations and product development activities as needed to ensure efficient department operations.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Food Science, Nutrition, Culinary Sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience in the food industry, quality assurance, or a related environment with a strong aptitude for learning.
  • Knowledge of food product development, including recipe formulation, ingredient interactions, and sensory evaluation.
  • Understanding of food safety principles, quality assurance processes, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Microsoft Teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask, adapt to changing priorities, and maintain attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment while maintaining a positive attitude.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in refrigerated coolers and freezer environments as needed.
