What is food innovation?

Food innovation refers to the development and implementation of new ideas, products, technologies, or processes within the food industry. This can include creating healthier food products, developing sustainable packaging, improving food safety, or introducing novel ingredients and production methods. Food innovation aims to meet changing consumer demands, address environmental concerns, and enhance the overall quality and variety of food available in the market. Professionals in this field often work in research and development, product design, and collaboration with culinary experts and scientists.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in food innovation, and why are they important?

To thrive in Food Innovation, you need expertise in food science, culinary arts, and product development, often supported by a degree in food technology or a related field. Familiarity with food safety regulations, sensory analysis tools, and R&D software is typically required. Creative problem-solving, collaboration, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for generating and implementing novel food concepts. These skills enable professionals to develop innovative, safe, and marketable food products that meet consumer demands and regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in food innovation roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Food Innovation often encounter challenges such as balancing creativity with strict food safety regulations, keeping up with rapidly changing consumer preferences, and ensuring scalability of new products. Collaborating closely with R&D, marketing, and supply chain teams helps address these hurdles by integrating diverse expertise and viewpoints early in the development process. Staying informed about industry trends, engaging in continuous learning, and being open to feedback are also crucial for overcoming obstacles and driving successful food innovations.

Job description

About High Scale
We're High Scale - a future-focused, data-obsessed agency revolutionizing video advertising on TV and social media. Imagine Amazon's obsession with metrics meeting SpaceX's audacious ambition-that's the DNA behind everything we do.
Our 120-person team of creatives, strategists, and operational innovators produces thousands of weekly campaigns for lifestyle, beauty, fashion, CPG, and DTC brands. With 50,000 sq. ft. of DTLA studios, 30+ fully equipped sets, and a global creator network, we're scaling fast-and we need a Food Stylist who can turn ingredients into visual magic that captivates audiences at first glance.
Why This Role Matters
At High Scale, visuals aren't just content-they are performance engines. Every shot you style directly influences engagement, retention, and ROI across social, TV, and digital platforms.
As our Food Stylist, you will transform recipes, ingredients, and products into mouthwatering visuals that elevate brand identity and drive conversion. You'll collaborate with videographers, set designers, directors, and creative strategists to bring food to life in a way that feels fresh, elevated, and irresistibly clickable.
Your work will shape the look, feel, and effectiveness of hundreds of high-performing ads seen by millions.
What You'll Do
1. Prepare & Style Food for Camera
  • Concept, prep, cook, and style food to achieve peak visual appeal.
  • Maintain consistency across all shots and angles.
  • Work with creative direction to elevate brand identity through presentation.

2. Collaborate With Creative & Production Teams
  • Partner with videographers, creative strategists, and directors to execute visual concepts.
  • Contribute to pre-production planning, mood boards, and shot lists.
  • Provide on-set solutions to achieve fast, high-quality results.

3. Manage Ingredients, Props & Materials
  • Source, organize, and prep all ingredients and tools needed per shoot.
  • Curate plates, props, textures, and backgrounds that enhance the final visual.
  • Maintain a clean, efficient, and organized styling workspace.

4. Ensure Quality, Consistency & Brand Integrity
  • Present food that photographs beautifully, stays fresh, and performs on camera.
  • Adapt styling techniques for social, editorial, and commercial formats.
  • Troubleshoot melting, wilting, or breakdown of ingredients during long production days.

5. Innovate & Enhance Creative Output
  • Experiment with new presentation techniques and trends.
  • Bring fresh ideas that enhance the storytelling and emotional appeal of each shot.
  • Contribute to a high-performance creative culture where quality is non-negotiable.

Who You Are
1. Experienced Food Stylist
  • 3-7 years of experience in food styling for advertising, content, or editorial work.
  • Strong cooking or culinary background; able to prepare food quickly and beautifully.
  • Portfolio showing a range of appetizing, camera-ready work.

2. Detail-Oriented Creative
  • You obsess over textures, colors, garnishes, and plating.
  • You understand how food behaves under lights, in motion, and in macro shots.

3. Fast, Flexible & Resourceful
  • Thrive in fast-paced environments with tight turnaround times.
  • Able to pivot quickly when creative direction evolves mid-shoot.

4. Collaborative & Communicative
  • Comfortable working with directors, photographers, producers, and creative teams.
  • Can translate feedback into immediate on-set adjustments.

Perks & Benefits
  • Competitive Compensation: $40,000-$70,000/year
  • Growth Opportunities: Work on high-volume productions for major food, CPG, and lifestyle brands.
  • Creative Environment: Access to cutting-edge studios, sets, and production resources.
  • Relentless Innovation Culture: You'll work with a team that experiments constantly and pushes boundaries daily.
