What does a Food Innovation Manager do?

A Food Innovation Manager is responsible for developing and implementing new food products, processes, or technologies within a company. They lead cross-functional teams to research market trends, identify consumer needs, and oversee the creation and launch of innovative food items. Their role involves collaborating with chefs, food scientists, marketing teams, and suppliers to ensure products are both creative and commercially viable. They also monitor industry developments to keep their company at the forefront of food trends and innovation.

What are the typical cross-functional collaborations for a Food Innovation Manager, and how do they impact daily work?

Food Innovation Managers regularly collaborate with teams such as R&D, marketing, supply chain, and quality assurance. These interactions are essential for aligning product development with market trends, ensuring feasibility in production, and maintaining compliance with food safety standards. Daily activities often involve joint meetings, brainstorming sessions, and coordinating timelines to bring innovative products from concept to launch. Successful collaboration helps streamline processes, fosters creative solutions, and accelerates time-to-market for new products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Food Innovation Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Food Innovation Manager, you need expertise in food science, product development, and market trend analysis, often supported by a degree in food technology, culinary arts, or a related field. Familiarity with food safety regulations, sensory analysis tools, and product lifecycle management software is typically required. Creativity, project management, and strong communication skills help drive successful cross-functional collaboration and innovative product launches. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing market-ready food products that meet consumer demands and regulatory standards.

S'more about the team

As a Product Manager at Factor Canada, you are responsible for solving meaningful customer problems while staying true to our brand vision. Reporting to the Director of Product, you will own key decisions regarding the positioning, assortment, and pricing of your portfolio. You will help define the "What" and the "Why" of our menu, building a strategic roadmap to deliver an experience that drives long-term customer retention and brand loyalty. Your mission is to ensure every innovation is not only loved by the customer but is also feasible for our operations and viable for our business.

Lettuce share what this role will be responsible for:

  • Roadmap Ownership: Define and own key aspects of our product roadmap, prioritizing the high-level business outcomes we must achieve and identifying the specific features required to deliver those goals, ensuring a constant balance between customer value and operational feasibility.
  • Customer Insights & Empathy: Serve as the definitive authority on our customer by combining quantitative and qualitative insights,  to build a deep understanding of our product's value proposition and customer pain points that is shared with the rest of the team.
  • Customer Advocacy: Act as the primary champion for the customer, explaining the "Why" behind every initiative and challenging trade-offs that might negatively impact the user experience.
  • Product Discovery: Lead the discovery process for new concepts by proactively validating that every offering is valuable to customers, easy to enjoy, feasible for production, and financially viable.
  • Integrated Product Development: Partner with Culinary, Operations, and other stakeholders early in the discovery phase to co-create solutions rather than hand off requirements, motivating stakeholders by connecting their work to specific customer problems to ensure buy-in from the production floor to the executive boardroom.
  • Post Launch Reviews: Digest and summarize product launches, A/B tests, or other data sets into actionable insights and next steps.
  • Commercial Ownership: You are responsible for the commercial viability of your portfolio, managing the trade-offs between quality, cost, and other considerations.
  • Global Collaboration: Partner with international brand counterparts to share best practices and ensure Factor Canada contributes to and benefits from global innovations and insights.
  • Entrepreneurial Approach: Take a rapid testing approach to learn and pivot quickly.

Sound a-peeling? Here's what we're looking for:

  • Experience: 5+ years of progressive experience in Product Management or Product Development, ideally within a food manufacturing, D2C subscription, or FMCG environment.
  • Customer-Centric Mindset: A customer-centric mindset: you have the ability to identify unmet customer needs and pain points; a knack for creative thinking to develop solutions that solve our customers' challenges.
  • Strategic Influence & Communication: Outstanding ability to manage meetings, present to diverse audiences, and shift perspectives to negotiate and secure genuine buy-in for strategic initiatives across international teams and cross-functional departments.
  • Analytical Reasoning: Exceptional ability to break down complex, ambiguous problems into manageable focus areas and build data-driven business cases.
  • Physical Product Fluency Deep understanding of product discovery and delivery frameworks with a proven track record of applying them to a physical supply chain.
  • Entrepreneurial Mindset: A strong entrepreneurial streak and a desire to excel in a high-growth, unstructured, and fast-paced environment. You are passionate about creating the future and shaping the ready-to-heat category in Canada.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, or a related technical field (e.g., Food Science).
  • Travel: A willingness to travel occasionally.

Let's cut to the cheese, this is why you'll love it here:

  • Box Discount - Amazing discounts on 1 box per week! 75% discount on weekly HelloFresh and Chefs Plate meal kits AND 50% off weekly Factor meal box.
  • Health & Wellness - Health & Dental benefits from day 1, a Health Spending Account, unlimited access to the Headspace app to meet your self-care needs, and 25% discount on GoodLife fitness memberships!
  • RRSP Matching - Competitive RRSP matching program offered
  • Vacation & PTO - Time off is also an important part of self-care! We offer generous vacation and PTO to help you create a good work-life balance.
  • Family Benefits - A parental leave top-up program for expectant parents.
  • Growth & Development - We support your career progression, provide development opportunities, and invest in your continued learning through our organization wide L&D fund.
  • Work Hard & Have Fun - From team socials to engaging company days, you'll have plenty of opportunity to experience the fun!

  • Food Puns - this one is kind of a big dill if you haven't already noticed. We even have some punny meeting room names!
