Job description

Description: To ensure that nutritious food is attractively served to PreK-12 students and staffย in the
District in accordance with the rules established by the U.S.D.A. for the National School Lunch Program
and the Illinois State Board of Education regulations.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Plans and supervises the preparation and serving of menus including breakfast and lunch
programs.
2. Supervises the overall safety and sanitation program in the school food service stations.
3. Determines the personnel requirements for the department; interviews and recommends
persons for hiring or advancement when positions are available.
4. Purchases food, supplies, and equipment and develops procedures for proper receiving,
storage, and distribution of same.
5. Keeps informed on new nutritional trends or concepts and on new developments in
equipment that will improve and upgrade the school nutritional program.
6. Assumes responsibility for preparing all reports regarding food services that are required
by local, state, or federal agencies.
7. Obtain bids from vendors for the procurement of food, equipment and services needed for
the department and make recommendations regarding which bids/proposals are in the
overall best interest of the food service program and District.
8. Complete and submit various food service related grants and other funding opportunities.
9. Assist with special District events.
10. Assist with arranging for substitutes when food service personnel are absent.
11. Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may from time to
time be assigned by the Superintendent.

Qualifications

ย 

The Food Service Directorย must have a Bachelor's degree, or equivalent educational experience, with academic major in specific areas (food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or a related field) OR Bachelor's degree in any academic major, and a State-recognized certificate for school nutriiton directors OR Associate's degree, or equivalent educational experience, with academic major in specific areas, and at least one year of relevent school nutrition programs experience.

At least 8 hours of food safety training is required either not more than 5 years prior to their starting date or completed within 30 calendar days of employee's start date.

Salary/Benefits

ย 

The Food Service Director's salary will not be less than $40,000. Insurance benefits include Board paid health, dental, vision and life insurance.

ย  Additional Notesย 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: With a full school year (partial school year will be adjusted accordingly), one hundred eighty (180) day school year plus five (5)
additional days for training, reporting, filing and cleaning.
Full Time: Sevenย (7) hour workday, starting at 7:00 am to 2:30ย pm. The workday includes a
30-minute unpaid lunch break and a 15-minute paid break during the work day.
Early dismissal days are considered a full workday and should be used for training, cleaning or
additional food preparation.
