What is a FOH manager?

FOH Managers, or Front of House Managers, are responsible for overseeing the customer-facing aspects of a restaurant, bar, or hospitality venue. Their main duties include supervising staff, ensuring excellent customer service, managing reservations, addressing guest concerns, and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere. They work closely with the kitchen (back of house) and other departments to ensure smooth operations and guest satisfaction. FOH Managers typically handle scheduling, staff training, and may also assist with inventory and sales reporting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FOH manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a FOH Manager, you need strong leadership, customer service expertise, and experience in hospitality management, often supported by a degree or relevant work history. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, reservation software, and health and safety regulations is typically expected. Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and organizational skills help build a positive team culture and guest experience. These skills are crucial for ensuring efficient operations, guest satisfaction, and smooth coordination between staff and management.

What are some common challenges faced by a FOH manager, and how can they be addressed?

A FOH Manager often encounters challenges such as balancing high customer expectations with staff productivity, managing busy service periods, and resolving conflicts between team members or with guests. To address these challenges, it's important to maintain clear communication, provide ongoing staff training, and develop strong problem-solving skills. Building a positive team culture and staying adaptable during peak times can also help ensure smooth operations and excellent customer experiences.

A Foh Manager usually has broader management duties, overseeing entire front-of-house operations, staff, and customer experience, often requiring management certifications. A Restaurant Supervisor focuses more on supervising staff and ensuring service quality on a daily basis. Both roles are essential in hospitality settings, but the Foh Manager generally holds a higher level of responsibility and experience.

What qualifications do you need to be a front of house manager?

A front of house manager typically needs previous experience in hospitality or customer service, strong leadership and communication skills, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Some employers may prefer candidates with a hospitality management degree or certifications such as ServSafe. Knowledge of POS systems and scheduling tools can also be beneficial.

About this Role

As the Front of House Manager, you're the captain of the floor! Keeping the energy high, the service smooth, and the vibe unmistakably Ian's. You'll work with the GM and AGM to make sure your FOH crew has the training, tools, and support they need to crush every shift. Our team is supportive and strongly believes that you can take pride in your work and have fun at the same time!

A big part of your gig is training and developing your team. You'll be the lead trainer for FOH: showing staff the ropes, giving helpful feedback, and running quarterly reviews. There's also the behind-the-scenes restaurant work: manager meetings, responding to messages, tackling special projects, and working with leadership to make your department run like a well-oiled machine.

  • Reliable transportation to and from the restaurant locations for a variety of shift times, including mornings, afternoons, and nights.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is a major plus!

Scheduling and Hours

Working 35-40 hours per week, you'll split your time between 30-35 hours on the floor and 5-10 hours handling the behind-the-scenes magic like projects, admin tasks, and meetings. Any time over 40 is paid as overtime.

Your schedule will drop 2-4 weeks at a time so you can plan your life and your pizza intake accordingly.

State is open Sunday-Wednesday 11am-10pm, Thursday 11am-2am, and Friday-Saturday 11am-2:30am. One late night shift per week (10pm-4am) is required.

The action happens on evenings and weekends! The ovens are roaring, the line's bumping, and the energy's high. So, we'll need you in the mix. You'll tag-team with the rest of the managers to handle emergencies and jump in when coverage is needed.
