Fly In Fly Out information

What are common challenges faced by fly in fly out workers and how can they be managed?

FIFO workers often face challenges such as extended periods away from family, adjusting to shift work, and adapting to remote living conditions. Managing these challenges typically involves maintaining regular communication with loved ones, establishing healthy routines for sleep and exercise, and taking advantage of on-site support services. Many employers offer resources like counseling, social activities, and wellness programs to help FIFO employees maintain their well-being and build a sense of community while on-site.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a fly in fly out worker?

To thrive as a Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) worker, you need practical trade or technical skills relevant to your sector (such as mining, construction, or oil and gas), often backed by industry-recognized certifications or licenses. Familiarity with safety protocols, site-specific machinery, and digital reporting systems is typically required. Strong resilience, adaptability, and teamwork are vital soft skills for coping with remote locations and rostered work schedules. These skills and qualities help ensure safety, productivity, and well-being in demanding and isolated work environments.

What is a fly in fly out job?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) jobs are positions where employees travel to remote work sites, often in the mining, oil, or construction sectors, for set periods before returning home for time off. Workers are flown to the site and provided with accommodation, meals, and transportation as part of their employment package. FIFO roles can involve long shifts and extended time away from home, but they typically offer higher pay and scheduled breaks. This work arrangement helps employers staff projects in remote or hard-to-reach areas where local labor is scarce.

This site-based role offers a unique opportunity to oversee multi-functional teams across catering, cleaning, and village services, while building trusted relationships with key stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

This is a highly hands-on role that requires strong visibility, decisive leadership, and a clear focus on delivering outcomes.

  • Lead, direct, and support Village Managers to deliver seamless, end-to-end operations, ensuring consistency across sites while keeping standards high.
  • Drive financial performance with full P&L accountability - maximising revenue, maintaining disciplined cost control, and consistently delivering against KPIs and budgets.
  • Build and sustain strong client and stakeholder relationships.
  • Cultivate a disciplined, high-performance culture grounded in accountability, development, and results.

  • Demonstrated success in managing senior client relationships within complex, matrixed environments - skilled at aligning multiple stakeholders, navigating competing priorities.
  • Proven capability to drive performance through structured operational planning, strong financial acumen, and strategic leadership - translating high-level objectives into tangible outcomes.
  • Well-versed in safety systems and relevant HSE legislation, with a proactive approach to risk management, embedding safety not just as a compliance requirement, but as a core operational value (the kind that people follow even when no one's watching).
  • Experienced in leading and managing large, diverse teams, including oversight of HR/IR matters, confident in fostering accountability, resolving challenges, and building cohesive teams.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage, influence, and develop teams - delivering service excellence through clarity, consistency, and a professional yet approachable style.
