Fly In Fly Out Remote information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Remote Worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Remote Worker, you generally need relevant trade or professional qualifications (such as in mining, engineering, or construction), physical fitness, and the ability to work long shifts in remote locations. Familiarity with site-specific tools, safety management systems, and certifications like MSHA, OSHA, or site inductions are typically required. Resilience, strong communication, and adaptability are critical soft skills for coping with isolation and collaborating effectively with diverse teams. These competencies ensure safety, productivity, and well-being in challenging, remote work environments.

What are Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) remote jobs?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) remote jobs are positions where employees travel to a remote worksite, often in industries like mining, oil and gas, or construction, for a set period of time, and then return home for a scheduled break. Workers are typically flown in by their employer to locations that are difficult to commute to daily. While on site, employees usually stay in employer-provided accommodations and work long shifts before flying back home to rest. This arrangement allows companies to access skilled labor for remote projects and gives workers extended time off between work rotations.

What are some common challenges faced by Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) remote workers, and how can they manage them?

FIFO remote workers often encounter challenges such as extended periods away from home, adapting to structured rosters, and maintaining work-life balance. The remote work environment typically involves long shifts and living in close quarters with colleagues, which can be both rewarding and demanding. To manage these challenges, it's important to establish strong communication with family, practice self-care, and leverage support services provided by employers, such as mental health resources and recreational activities during off-hours.

Job description

Requisition ID: 99252

Job Category: Commissioning

Location: Calgary, AB, Canada

Join a company that is passionately committed to the pursuit of a better world through positive change. With more than 70 years of business and technical expertise in mining, energy, and infrastructure, our 10,000 colleagues in 150 countries tirelessly work toward bettering the industries in which we operate. With practical solutions that are safe, innovative and sustainable, we think globally while acting locally. Are you looking for an opportunity to join a diverse group of professionals who are committed to remaining exceptional? We look forward to hearing from you.

CORE brings together the necessary elements of a project to achieve nameplate value and deliver peak asset performance. We take a staged approach to verifying technical readiness and ensuring organizational preparedness, right up to achieving full operational capacity.

Role Overview

We are conducting a global search for a Global Discipline Director of Completions. In this role, the GDD of Completions is accountable for establishing global best practices, governance, and technical excellence across all stages of project completions (Stage 1 to Stage 5). The role places strong emphasis on Stage 1 (S1) completions and turnover from Construction to Commissioning, as well as turnover from the project entity to owners/operations.

A critical expectation is to champion the completions discipline across the organization, ensuring project teams are fully supported in applying best practices, maturing their completions strategies, and successfully progressing through each stage of the completions lifecycle. The GDD is responsible for driving strong alignment between Construction and Commissioning and establishing processes that create a โ€œpull effectโ€ from Commissioning on Construction, improving work sequencing, mechanical completion predictability, and overall project delivery schedule.

Additionally, the GDD of Completions ensures that completions processes are fully integrated with operational readiness, enabling seamless transition to operations, high-quality turnover, and effective asset start-up.

We are looking for professionals who think and act like owners, thrive on creating new approaches and improving processes, and can bridge technical execution with strategic foresight to deliver exceptional client value. Most importantly, you will inspire, develop and lead our teams with a focus on developing future great completions professionals, sustaining the growth of our expertise for decades to come.

Candidates must be willing to travel to meet teams and clients including remote project sites as required, and participate in site assignments, sometimes requiring fly-in/fly-out arrangements for periods of time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership
    • Define and lead the global strategy for completions excellence across Stage 1 through Stage 5, driving standardization and consistency across all regions and projects.
    • Establish and promote global best practices for S1 completions, construction-to-commissioning turnover, and final handover to operations.
    • Champion completions within the organization by strengthening its visibility, strategic importance, and cross-disciplinary integration.
    • Develop processes that create a commissioning-driven pull on construction, enabling early system readiness and accelerated project delivery.
    • Drive alignment between Engineering, Construction, Commissioning, and Operations to support end-to-end completions maturity.
  • Technical Excellence & Discipline Governance
    • Develop and maintain global standards, specifications, procedures, and tools for all completions stages.
    • Govern the successful application of completions practices, including systemization turnover requirement integrations with construction schedule, coordination and alignment with site quality with regards to minimum requirements, tracking of records via digital tools, closure and tracking of Non-Conformity Reports (NCRs) and TQ (Technical Queries), walk-downs and punch list management, etc.
  • Project Support
    • Support projects in completions planning, turnover sequencing, and readiness assessments.
    • Ensure projects receive hands-on guidance in applying best practices and progressing through Stages 1โ€“5.
    • Conduct reviews to assess compliance, readiness, and risk levels, providing expert recommendations.
    • Support the construction team with alignment with construction work packaging (CWP) strategies that reflect commissioning priorities and system readiness goals.
    • Travel to remote sites when required, including fly-in/fly-out assignments if required.
  • Integration with Operational Readiness
    • Ensure completions processes directly support operational readiness requirements, including data, documentation, training, maintenance planning, and operational acceptance criteria.
    • Provide guidelines to systematically attain alignment between completion milestones and operations' needs on all Hatchโ€™s projects to ensure full readiness for safe and efficient startup.
  • Digital & Data Leadership
    • Responsible for Hatchโ€™s completions system (iPasCS) as well as the team administrating the tool.
    • Responsible for Hatchโ€™s global strategy and governance for digital completions systems and ensure integration with project data environments.
  • People Leadership & Talent Development
    • Develop and maintain competency frameworks, training programs, and capability-building initiatives.
    • Mentor completions teams members and overall project teams in best practices, completions requirements and what part they play in the overall picture.
    • Promote a culture where completions excellence is recognized as a critical driver of predictable, safe, and efficient project execution.
  • Stakeholder & Client Engagement
    • Serve as the global representative for completions matters with clients, partners, regulators, and industry bodies.
    • Support business development teams in shaping completions strategies for project proposals and pursuits.
