What is a fly in fly out operator machinist?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Operator Machinists are skilled tradespeople who travel to remote worksites, typically in the mining, oil, or gas industries, to operate and maintain machinery. They work on a rotational schedule, flying to the site for a set period (such as two weeks on) and then flying home for time off (such as one week off). Their responsibilities include setting up, operating, and troubleshooting machine tools, as well as performing routine maintenance. FIFO Operator Machinists must adapt to challenging environments and often work long shifts while on site. This role requires technical expertise, flexibility, and a willingness to spend extended periods away from home.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a fly in fly out operator machinist?

To thrive as a Fly In Fly Out Operator Machinist, you need strong mechanical aptitude, trade qualifications (such as a Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade or equivalent), and hands-on machining experience. Familiarity with CNC machines, lathes, milling equipment, and safety systems, along with relevant certifications like confined space and working at heights, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, adaptability to remote environments, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and precise operation and maintenance of critical equipment in challenging, remote work settings.

What are the unique challenges faced by fly in fly out operator machinists, and how can they be managed?

FIFO Operator Machinists often face the challenge of adjusting to rotating schedules and extended periods away from home, which can impact work-life balance and personal relationships. The work environment is typically remote and can be physically demanding, requiring adaptability and strong self-motivation. To manage these challenges, many employers provide on-site support services, recreational facilities, and structured shift rotations. Building strong communication with family and taking advantage of on-site resources can help maintain well-being and job satisfaction.

Hoosier, Inc. | Full-Time

We’re a fast-growing precision machine shop looking for an experienced CNC Lathe Setup Machinist who can take a job from print to production with minimal oversight. This is a hands-on role for someone who understands setups, tooling, and process optimization, not just operation.

  • Interpret blueprints and GD&T to ensure accurate setups and production
  • Select and install cutting tools, inserts, holders, and fixtures
  • Set tool offsets, touch-offs, and prove out new programs
  • Make on-the-fly G-code edits and adjustments at the machine
  • Optimize feeds, speeds, and cycle times for efficiency and tool life
  • Run and verify first article parts to print requirements
  • Use precision inspection tools (micrometers, calipers, indicators, etc.)
  • Troubleshoot machining and quality issues in real time
  • Collaborate with engineering and programming to improve processes

What We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years CNC lathe setup experience (mills or Swiss experience a plus)
  • Strong knowledge of machining processes, tooling, and materials
  • Ability to independently complete full setups from print to production

Pay

  • $25.00 – $35.00 per hour, depending on experience

Why Join Us

  • Competitive pay and consistent hours
