What is a fly in fly out mining?

A Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) mining job is a work arrangement where employees travel to remote mine sites for a set period, usually working long shifts, before flying back home for their scheduled time off. These jobs are common in the mining industry, where operations are located far from major cities. Companies typically provide flights, accommodation, and meals while workers are on-site. FIFO roles can be demanding due to long hours and time away from family, but they often offer competitive salaries and benefits.

What should I expect from the work schedule and accommodation in a fly in fly out mining position?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Mining jobs typically follow rostered schedules such as two weeks on-site followed by one week off, which means you will spend extended periods away from home. During your shift, accommodation is usually provided in purpose-built camps with amenities like meals, laundry facilities, and recreational spaces. While the hours can be long and physically demanding, many find the structured roster allows for substantial time off between rotations. It's important to be prepared for communal living and the remote nature of mining sites, but these arrangements are designed to support workers’ comfort and well-being. The FIFO model also offers unique networking opportunities with industry professionals from across the country.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a fly in fly out mining position?

To thrive in a Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Mining role, you need a solid understanding of mining operations, safety protocols, and relevant trade or technical qualifications such as a mining engineering degree or certification in heavy machinery operation. Familiarity with mining equipment, safety management systems, and adherence to industry regulations is crucial. Strong teamwork, resilience, and adaptability to remote environments are essential soft skills in this field. These competencies enable safe, efficient operations and help employees manage the unique challenges of extended time away from home.

Job description

ABOUT RED HOSPITALITY & LEISURE
RED Hospitality & Leisure (Experience RED) is a multi-vertical marine and hospitality operator headquartered in the U.S. Virgin Islands. We run charter operations, ferry services, transportation, destination management (DMC), and concession services across St. Thomas and St. John in partnership with properties including the Westin St. John, Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas, Frenchman's Reef, and Hampton by Hilton.
Our fleet spans offshore catamarans, high-speed ferries, center consoles, and personal watercraft - operating across two islands and multiple partner destinations year-round. We are a fast-moving, operationally intensive company and we build careers for people who thrive in dynamic marine environments.
THE ROLE
We are seeking an experienced Mobile Marine Technician to serve as a roving fleet-support specialist across our multi-destination operations. This is a hands-on, independent role requiring strong diagnostic and repair skills on both inboard diesel and outboard gasoline powerplants, as well as supporting systems including electrical, hydraulics, and drivetrain components.
You will rotate between deployment locations - St. Thomas USVI, St. John USVI, Turks & Caicos, and Key West, FL - on a structured 10-days-on / 5-days-off schedule. Travel, accommodations, and per diem are provided while on deployment.
SCHEDULE & DEPLOYMENT STRUCTURE
Rotation: 10 consecutive days on assignment / 5 days off
Deployment Locations: St. Thomas USVI, St. John USVI, Turks & Caicos, Key West FL
Travel: Flights, ground transfers, and lodging provided during all on-rotation periods
Per Diem: Provided for meals and incidentals while on deployment
Candidates must be based within commuting distance of a qualifying home airport (see Residency & Travel Requirements below). RED will coordinate all travel logistics - your responsibility is to be ready to fly on rotation start dates.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Diagnose and repair inboard diesel engines across catamaran, ferry, and center console hull types
  • Diagnose and repair outboard gasoline engines (primarily Yamaha, Mercury, and Suzuki platforms)
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, fluid services, impeller replacements, and zincs
  • Troubleshoot and repair marine electrical systems, bilge systems, and instrumentation
  • Conduct pre-season and post-season commissioning/decommissioning across fleet
  • Coordinate parts procurement, maintain parts inventory logs, and manage vendor relationships on-site
  • Support haul-out coordination and work with boatyard partners as needed
  • Document all service work in maintenance logs; update fleet status reports daily
  • Communicate proactively with on-site operations managers and coordinate with shore-based fleet management
  • Maintain a safe, organized mobile work environment; comply with all OSHA and marine safety standards
  • Respond to urgent vessel breakdowns and service calls during deployment windows

PASSPORT & INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
This position involves regular international travel. Candidates must meet all of the following requirements before their first deployment and maintain them throughout employment:
Required Travel Documentation
  • Valid U.S. passport (or equivalent for eligible non-U.S. nationals) - required before start date
  • Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond each travel date at all times
  • Turks & Caicos (British Overseas Territory): Entry via valid passport; U.S. citizens do not require a visa for stays under 90 days
  • Key West, FL: Domestic travel - no passport required, but passport is the recommended ID for all company air travel
  • St. Thomas & St. John USVI: U.S. territory - U.S. citizens do not need a passport, but a passport is strongly recommended for seamless travel across all rotation destinations
  • Any required visas, work permits, or entry documentation for non-U.S. nationals must be obtained and maintained at the candidate's own responsibility
  • Candidates must not have travel restrictions (outstanding warrants, immigration holds, or criminal history) that would prevent entry into any deployment destination

RED Hospitality & Leisure will not sponsor international work visas. All candidates must be independently authorized to work in the United States and to enter all deployment destinations without restriction.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum 5 years hands-on experience as a marine technician or diesel mechanic in a commercial or charter environment
  • Demonstrated proficiency with inboard diesel systems (Yanmar, Volvo Penta, Cummins, or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated proficiency with outboard gasoline engines (Yamaha, Mercury, Honda, Suzuki, or equivalent)
  • Strong working knowledge of 12V/24V marine electrical systems
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision across remote locations
  • Valid U.S. driver's license
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States (USCIS work authorization required - no exceptions)
  • Valid passport with at least 6 months validity; must be eligible to enter all deployment destinations without restriction
  • Physically capable of working in marine environments: lifting 50+ lbs, working in confined engine compartments, exposure to heat and humidity
