Fly In Fly Out Laborer information

What are some typical challenges faced by Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Laborers and how can they be managed?

FIFO Laborers often encounter challenges such as long shifts, extended periods away from home, and adjusting to remote camp environments. Managing these challenges involves building strong support networks both on-site and at home, utilizing available mental health and wellness resources, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance when off rotation. Many companies also offer programs to help employees stay connected with family and manage the unique demands of FIFO work.

What are Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) laborers?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) laborers are workers who travel to remote job sites, typically in the mining, oil, gas, or construction industries, for a set period before returning home for rest. They usually work on a rotation schedule, such as two weeks on and one week off, with flights and accommodation arranged by the employer. This arrangement allows companies to staff projects in isolated locations where it may be difficult to find local labor. FIFO laborers often work long shifts but receive extended time off between rotations.

Job description

NOW HIRING • PART-TIME
Weekend News Anchor
Newsradio 98.5 FM & AM 560 WGAN • South Portland, Maine
Want your voice on the air across Southern Maine - and to contribute to our socials? We're hiring our next Weekend News Anchor, and we want someone who actually wants to be here.
This isn't a "pay your dues and wait" gig. You'll anchor live, on-air newscasts every Saturday & Sunday mornings (10 hours minimum each week) and jump in on weekdays when coverage is needed for WGAN Morning News - real reps, real audience, real fast. No newsroom experience? No problem. If you're a fast learner who's hungry to grow, we'll train you on everything else.
WGAN is Portland and Southern Maine's news and talk leader - a heritage station with serious local cred, now building out our next generation of on-air talent and content creators.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
  • Write, produce, and anchor live newscasts - your voice, your byline
  • Break news and deliver sports updates when it matters most
  • Keep a pulse on the news cycle and social media in real time
  • Create and post content for Facebook, including Reels - this is content creation, not just radio
  • Edit basic weather and audio elements
  • Troubleshoot minor studio/on-air hiccups (we'll teach you the tech)
What You'll Bring
  • A genuine interest in local news and storytelling - experience is a plus, not a requirement
  • Strong writing chops and on-air presence (or the drive to build them fast)
  • A fast-learner mindset and a level head when deadlines hit
  • Comfort with tech and a willingness to troubleshoot on the fly
  • Reliability for those early weekend mornings - this is the trade-off for getting real on-air experience this early
  • Burli or broadcast board experience is a bonus, but training is provided
Why WGAN
  • Real on-air experience and a byline you can actually point to
  • Mentorship from a newsroom that wants to see you grow your career
  • Your work reaches a real, local audience - not just a portfolio piece
  • A flexible, part-time schedule that can work alongside school, another job, or your next big move
