Fly In Fly Out Fiber information

What is a fly in fly out fiber?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Fiber jobs involve technicians, engineers, or installers traveling to remote locations to set up, maintain, or repair fiber optic networks. Workers typically fly to the job site for a set period (such as two weeks on, one week off), then return home during their off time. These roles are common in industries like mining, oil and gas, or remote infrastructure projects, where specialized fiber optic skills are needed but the work sites are far from urban centers. FIFO arrangements provide access to skilled labor for isolated projects while allowing workers to spend downtime at home.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fly in fly out fiber technician?

To thrive as a Fly In Fly Out Fiber Technician, you need expertise in fiber optic installation, splicing, testing, and troubleshooting, often supported by a relevant technical diploma or certification (such as CFOT). Familiarity with OTDRs (Optical Time Domain Reflectometers), fusion splicers, and specialized safety protocols is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability to remote environments, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills ensure reliable network performance and safety while working in challenging, remote locations with limited support.

What are some common challenges faced by fly in fly out fiber technicians, and how can they be managed?

FIFO Fiber Technicians often encounter challenges such as working in remote locations, extended periods away from home, and adapting to varying site conditions. Managing these challenges involves strong communication with supervisors, maintaining a healthy work-life balance during off-rotation periods, and being proactive about personal well-being while on site. Teamwork is crucial, as technicians frequently collaborate with other specialists to complete projects efficiently. Building resilience and staying organized can help make the FIFO lifestyle more sustainable and rewarding.

Job description

We are looking for experienced pros or highly motivated individuals ready to master the trade.

The TNI Mission

We are seeking Fiber Optic Cable Technicians who take pride in their work. Whether you're a seasoned splicer or a mechanically-inclined go-getter, we provide the environment and the tech to help you excel. We will train the right people, but we expect excellence in return.

The Requirements

  • Legal & Safety: Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check.
  • On the Road: Must possess a valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record.

What You’ll Be Doing

You aren't just "pulling wire." You are building the infrastructure of the future.

  • Precision Splicing: Perform fiber splicing with surgical precision to ensure secure, high-speed connectivity.
  • Advanced Installs: Install, test, and troubleshoot fiber optic, Ethernet, telephony, and low-voltage systems in both residential and commercial settings.
  • Problem Solving: Use tools like ohmmeters to diagnose electrical issues and apply your mechanical knowledge to navigate complex pathways (walls, ceilings, and underground).
  • System Maintenance: Provide elite field service support, replacing faulty components and optimizing network performance on-site.
  • Blueprint Execution: Interpret technical diagrams and schematics to ensure every project meets industry-leading safety codes and specifications.

What You Bring to the Table

  • Technical Knowledge: Hands-on experience with telephony systems and low-voltage wiring.
  • Tool Savvy: Mastery of hand tools and a high mechanical aptitude.
  • Field Experience: Prior experience as a service technician in the field is highly desirable.
  • Safety First: A deep understanding of electrical safety practices and low-voltage standards.

Why Tech Network Inc.?

  • Cutting-Edge Tech: Work with the latest equipment in a fast-paced, high-impact environment.
  • Real Career Growth: We don't just offer a job; we offer a path to becoming a top-tier network specialist.
  • Supportive Culture: We value quality workmanship over speed. If you do the job right, we have your back.
