What is a fly in fly out apprentice pipe fitter?

A Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Apprentice Pipe Fitter is an entry-level worker who is learning the pipe fitting trade while working on remote job sites, typically in industries such as mining, oil & gas, or construction. FIFO means they travel to a remote work location for a set period (like two weeks), then return home for a break. As apprentices, they receive on-the-job training under experienced pipe fitters, assisting with tasks like assembling, installing, and maintaining piping systems. This role often involves long hours and working in challenging environments, but offers valuable experience and the opportunity to work towards becoming a fully qualified pipe fitter.

To thrive as a Fly In Fly Out Apprentice Pipe Fitter, you generally need a high school diploma, mechanical aptitude, and enrollment in a recognized pipe fitting apprenticeship program. Familiarity with hand and power tools, blueprint reading, and safety certifications like OSHA or site-specific inductions are commonly required. Strong teamwork, adaptability to remote environments, and effective communication help apprentices excel in demanding, fast-paced settings.
