What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fly-In Drilling Operator, and why are they important?

To excel as a Fly-In Drilling Operator, you need a solid background in drilling techniques, equipment operation, and safety procedures, often supported by relevant certifications such as First Aid, WHMIS, and H2S Alive. Familiarity with specialized drilling rigs, GPS navigation, and maintenance software is typically required. Strong problem-solving, adaptability, and teamwork are crucial soft skills for managing remote and challenging work environments. These competencies ensure safe, efficient drilling operations and the ability to handle emergencies in isolated locations.

What are the unique challenges of working in a fly-in drilling role and how can I prepare for them?

Working in a fly-in drilling role often means operating in remote locations with limited access to amenities and being away from home for extended periods. The work schedule typically involves rotations, such as two weeks on and two weeks off, which can be demanding but also allows for substantial time off between shifts. Teamwork and adaptability are crucial, as you’ll collaborate closely with a small crew in challenging weather conditions and must follow strict safety protocols. Preparing mentally and physically for isolation, long hours, and rigorous safety standards will help you succeed in this dynamic environment.

What is fly in drilling?

Fly in drilling refers to drilling operations, typically in the oil, gas, or mining industries, where workers are transported by aircraft to remote worksites that are not accessible by road. These jobs often involve rotating shifts, such as two weeks on and two weeks off, with accommodations and meals provided on site. Fly in drilling is common in regions like northern Canada, Alaska, and Australia, where drilling locations are far from permanent settlements. This arrangement allows companies to access resources in isolated areas while providing workers with a structured work-life balance.

With a fleet of more than 50 aircraft, PJH primarily supports the utility, forestry, and construction industries. Our operations are built on three core pillars: world-class equipment, highly skilled and experienced personnel, and an unwavering commitment to customer service. From project planning through execution, PJ Helicopters works closely with clients to ensure missions are performed safely, efficiently, and to the highest professional standard.

PJ Helicopters is seeking an experienced AS350 pilot with drill moving experience for a Utility Pilot position flying in support of Utility Powerline Construction, and Drill Support operations for 2026. Employees at PJH have access to over 40 airframes from a range of manufacturers including Airbus, Boeing, Bell, Sikorsky, Pilatus, Cessna, and more. From drill support in an AS350, to flying a 407 in the utility wire environment, to precision external load in a UH-60 — it's our diverse fleet, wide range of customers, and opportunities for advancement that make PJH an exceptional place to build a career.

· Flying in the wire environment in support of powerline construction and utility patrol

· External load operations including HEC and construction support

· HEC experience (preferred)

· Sock line pulling (preferred)

· Wire environment experience required

· Must have in knowledge in CFR 133 /135.

· Relocation (not required for qualified individuals).
