How much do fluid power system design engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 23, 2026, the average yearly pay for fluid power system design engineer in the United States is $118,589.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $100,000.00 and $137,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Fluid Power System Design Engineer vs Hydraulic Design Engineer?

AspectFluid Power System Design EngineerHydraulic Design Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical, Electrical, or Fluid Power Engineering; certifications like Certified Fluid Power SpecialistBachelor's in Mechanical or Civil Engineering; certifications in hydraulic systems are common
Work EnvironmentDesigning and testing fluid power systems in manufacturing or engineering firmsDeveloping hydraulic components and systems, often in construction or industrial settings
Industry UsageUsed across automation, manufacturing, and mobile equipment industriesPrimarily in construction, agriculture, and heavy machinery sectors

The main difference is that Fluid Power System Design Engineers focus on designing and analyzing complete fluid power systems, including pneumatics and hydraulics, while Hydraulic Design Engineers specialize specifically in hydraulic components and systems. Both roles require similar credentials and often work in related industries, but their scope and focus differ.

What does a Fluid Power System Design Engineer do?

A Fluid Power System Design Engineer specializes in designing, developing, and optimizing systems that use fluids (liquids or gases) to transmit power. These engineers work with hydraulic and pneumatic systems found in machinery such as industrial equipment, vehicles, and manufacturing tools. Their responsibilities include selecting components, creating schematics, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring efficiency and safety of fluid power systems. They often collaborate with other engineers and technicians to integrate these systems into larger mechanical assemblies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fluid Power System Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fluid Power System Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, fluid dynamics, and hydraulics, typically with a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools like MATLAB or Simulink, and industry certifications such as Certified Fluid Power Specialist (CFPS) are often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and clients. These competencies are crucial for designing safe, efficient, and reliable fluid power systems that meet project specifications and industry standards.

What are some common challenges Fluid Power System Design Engineers face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Fluid Power System Design Engineers often collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing engineers to integrate hydraulic and pneumatic systems into larger products or machinery. One common challenge is ensuring clear communication across disciplines, as each field may use different terminology and design priorities. Additionally, balancing system efficiency, cost, and manufacturability while meeting safety standards can require negotiation and creative problem solving. Being proactive in cross-functional meetings and developing a basic understanding of related engineering domains can help overcome these challenges.
