Job description
JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Floral Assistant to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the care and maintenance of all interior plants, assisting with the floral shop's daily operations, and providing support during events across the campus. This is a hands-on position that requires an eye for detail, a passion for plants and flowers, and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment. This role is critical to maintaining the luxury standard and reputation of The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa while upholding the highest levels of discretion and professionalism.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Plant Care and Maintenance:
- Monitor the health and condition of all interior plants, ensuring they are watered, fertilized, and pruned as instructed.
- Identify failing plants and treat them as needed by collaborating with the floral team when necessary.
- Assist in repotting and placement of plants to enhance aesthetic appeal within the interior spaces.
- Floral Shop Support:
- Process incoming flowers and greenery, ensuring they are properly hydrated and prepared for production.
- Clean and maintain vases, tools, and other equipment to ensure a tidy and safe working environment.
- Perform regular cleaning tasks in the floral shop, including sweeping, mopping floors, and taking out the trash.
- Delivery Duties:
- Safely load and transport floral arrangements and products to various locations across the campus as needed.
- Ensure all deliveries are timely and that products arrive in perfect condition.
- Utilize the company van to make special deliveries as needed.
- Event Assistance:
- Assist with the set-up and breakdown of floral displays for events, ensuring that all arrangements and details are executed according to specifications.
- Collaborate with event coordinators to understand floral needs and implement design plans effectively.
- Customer Service:
- Provide friendly and knowledgeable responses to inquiries about plant care and floral arrangements.
- Assist customers in selecting plants and flowers as needed.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- High school education, GED, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 2-4 years of experience in both floral and plant care experience
- Solid understanding of plant care and maintenance techniques.
- Previous experience in a retail floral shop or related field is a plus.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Hours required: Scheduled days and hours vary based on departmental needs. Must be open to working a flexible schedule, including holidays, weekends and high business demand times (i.e. Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Christmas, etc.). Some work will be performed off property for special events.

PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to meet the following minimum physical requirements for at least an eight-hour shift:
- Physical Stamina: Frequent standing, walking, climbing ladders and stairs, kneeling, reaching overhead, lifting and carrying various objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Must be able to work safely and effectively in outdoor temperatures. This position requires working indoors in a floral shop environment and outdoors for plant care and event setups. The role may involve exposure to varying temperatures and conditions
- Hearing / Speech: Must be able to effectively engage in one-on-one communication with guests, members, and customers and use a 2-way radio to communicate clearly and accurately with co-workers.
- Vision: Must be able to accurately read instructions, reports, and log sheets. Must be able to work with computers and PDAs in varying light conditions.
- Literacy: Must be able to produce, read and understand reports, including security, incident and police reports. Must be able to analyze and process written information from a variety of sources and effectively communicate content of reports.
- Chemicals/Agents: Must be able to work safely with chemicals according to SDS sheets and all applicable laws, codes and regulatory requirements.
