What is flood modeling?

A Flood Modeling job involves using computer simulations and data analysis to predict and assess flood risks. Professionals in this field analyze rainfall patterns, land topography, and hydrological data to create models that help in flood preparedness and mitigation. They often work with government agencies, environmental organizations, or private firms to develop flood maps, design drainage systems, and support emergency planning. Strong skills in GIS, hydrodynamic modeling, and statistical analysis are typically required for this role.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in flood modeling?

Professionals in Flood Modeling typically spend their days gathering and analyzing hydrological and geographical data, running simulations using modeling software, and interpreting results to assess flood risks. They often prepare technical reports, maps, and presentations for stakeholders such as government agencies, engineers, or urban planners. Additionally, collaboration with other scientists, engineers, and environmental specialists is common to ensure comprehensive project outcomes. The work may involve site visits, data validation, and responding quickly to urgent events or client requests, offering both variety and real-world impact.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in flood modeling, and why are they important?

To thrive in Flood Modeling, you need a solid background in hydrology, civil or environmental engineering, or a related field, along with strong quantitative and analytical skills. Familiarity with flood modeling software (such as HEC-RAS, MIKE FLOOD, or ArcGIS), GIS applications, and possibly relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Floodplain Manager) is highly valued. Attention to detail, strong communication abilities, and the capacity to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams are important soft skills. These abilities are essential for producing reliable flood risk assessments, effectively conveying complex data, and supporting decision-making in flood management projects.

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) is seeking a highly analytical and technically skilled Flood (Water Resources) Engineer with expertise in riverine and pluvial flood modeling to join our Catastrophe Engineering and Analytics (Cat E&A) team. Cat E&A is an innovative, multidisciplinary team conducting global, location level catastrophe risk evaluations, developing independent models and solutions, and delivering quantitative insured loss metrics that inform underwriting decisions.

As a member of the Catastrophe Engineering and Analytics team, you will also work across functional groups to refine BHSI’s internal view of flood and other natural catastrophe risks.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to flood risk modeling and analytics to support ongoing business needs

  • Highly motivated, detail-oriented, and a strong team player

BHSI Offers:

  • A competitive package and exciting growth opportunities for career-oriented teammates.
  • A dynamic, action oriented, and thoughtful environment centered on always doing the right thing for our customers, teammates, and our other stakeholders.
  • A purposely non-bureaucratic organization that embraces simplicity over complexity and emphasizes individual excellence in a team framework.
  • Benefits that support your life and well-being, which include:
  • Comprehensive Health, Dental and Vision benefits
  • Disability Insurance (both short-term and long-term)
  • Life Insurance (for you and your family)
  • Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance (for you and your family)
  • Flexible Spending Accounts
  • Health Reimbursement Account
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Retirement Savings 401(k) Plan with Company Match
  • Generous holiday and Paid Time Off
  • Tuition Reimbursement
  • Paid Parental Leave

The base salary range for this position in San Ramon, CA, Boston, MA, or Atlanta, GA is $100,000 to $160,000, along with annual bonus eligibility. Total compensation for a candidate is determined by their relevant skills, location, and experience. We value our teammates – both their capabilities and character – as demonstrated by our amazing culture.
