They work alongside flight physicians, paramedics, and other medical personnel to assess, stabilize, and treat patients during transport. Their responsibilities include performing emergency procedures, managing life support equipment, and ensuring patient safety in high-pressure situations. Flight PAs typically have experience in emergency medicine or critical care and may require additional certifications in aeromedical transport.

What does a flight physician assistant do during a typical shift, and how often are they on-call?

A typical shift for a Flight Physician Assistant involves responding to emergency medical transports, providing advanced life support, and collaborating closely with flight nurses, pilots, and other healthcare providers. Shifts can be variable, often lasting 12 to 24 hours, with scheduled on-call periods to cover unexpected medical flights. During downtime, you may participate in equipment checks, training, or documentation tasks, but must remain ready to launch quickly when a call comes in. Familiarity with aeromedical equipment, electronic patient care systems, and protocols for in-flight medical emergencies is crucial. Excellent teamwork, critical thinking, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are standout soft skills. These competencies ensure patient safety and effective medical care in the challenging and dynamic environment of air transport.
