What is a flexible video editor?

Flexible Video Editors are professionals who edit video content with the ability to adapt to various project requirements, styles, and workflows. They often work on different types of videos, such as commercials, social media clips, documentaries, or corporate presentations. Their flexibility allows them to collaborate with diverse teams, use a range of editing software, and adjust to changing client needs or project deadlines. This versatility is especially valuable for freelance editors or those working in fast-paced creative environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flexible video editor?

To thrive as a Flexible Video Editor, you need strong video editing skills, a keen eye for visual storytelling, and proficiency in editing software, often backed by a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with tools like Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, and motion graphics platforms, as well as knowledge of various video formats and codecs, is typically required. Creativity, time management, and strong communication skills enable editors to interpret client feedback and adapt to shifting project requirements. These abilities ensure high-quality, engaging video content that meets deadlines and client expectations in a dynamic media environment.

How do flexible video editors typically manage deadlines and client expectations when working on multiple projects remotely?

Flexible Video Editors often juggle several projects at once, which requires strong organizational and communication skills. Using project management tools and clear scheduling helps track progress and set realistic deadlines, while regular check-ins with clients or team members ensure expectations are aligned. It's common to clarify project scopes early on and to provide draft versions for feedback, which helps prevent misunderstandings and last-minute changes. Successful editors prioritize transparency about workloads and timelines, fostering trust and smooth collaboration, even when working remotely.

Syracuse University is building something new. We're launching SU Global to reimagine how we support and scale accessible online pathways for non-traditional learners, in a dynamic, innovative, and data-driven environment. That means rethinking how we work.
This role requires on-campus presence because the best ideas emerge from real-time collaboration, the mentorship that happens in hallways, and the spontaneous problem-solving that defines startup culture. You'll work non-traditional hours when needed - evening and weekend coverage, whatever it takes to deliver the best-in-class experience.
We're looking for team members who thrive in:
  • High-energy, in-person environments where innovation happens face-to-face
  • Flexible scheduling that follows student needs, not the clock
  • Startup intensity within a world-class university structure

We're not looking for people who want a job. We're looking for builders who want a mission.

  • BFA or BA in Cinema or related field (e.g., Editing/Post-Production); or three (3) or more years of video production experience in a professional environment.
  • Proficient in Adobe Premiere, Media Encoder, After Effects, Photoshop, Audition, and DaVinci Resolve.

Skills and Knowledge
  • Must have a fundamental understanding of video and audio editing and color correction.

  • Assemble footage into string-outs, rough, fine, and final cuts while maintaining professional standards.
  • Receive and implement notes regarding the editing of projects based on content and input from producers, instructional designers, and faculty members.
  • Perform initial color correction passes and preliminary sound sweetening.
  • Compress, upload, and archive final videos; ensure quality control and consistency on final deliverables.
  • Archive and maintain records of master files, ensuring all footage is secured and backed up.
