What is a flexible structural engineer?

A Flexible Structural Engineer is a specialized type of structural engineer who focuses on designing and analyzing structures that are meant to flex, bend, or withstand dynamic movements. This role often involves projects with materials and systems that must accommodate vibrations, seismic activity, or other forces that require the structure to move without failing. Flexible structural engineers work on projects like bridges, tall buildings, stadiums, and even flexible electronics infrastructure. Their expertise ensures that these structures remain safe, durable, and functional under various loading conditions.

How does a flexible structural engineer typically collaborate with architects and construction teams during a project?

Flexible structural engineers frequently work closely with architects and construction teams to ensure that structural designs align with both aesthetic goals and practical requirements. This often involves attending coordination meetings, reviewing design changes, and providing input on material selection or construction methods. Since the role is flexible, communication may occur through a mix of in-person site visits, virtual meetings, and digital collaboration tools. Building strong relationships and maintaining clear, proactive communication are key to resolving potential conflicts and ensuring project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flexible structural engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Flexible Structural Engineer, you need a solid understanding of structural analysis, material science, and engineering principles, typically supported by a degree in civil or structural engineering and relevant licensure (such as PE or EIT). Proficiency with structural design software (e.g., AutoCAD, SAP2000, ETABS) and familiarity with building codes and standards are essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and address project challenges. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring the safety, efficiency, and adaptability of modern structures in a dynamic engineering environment.

What is the difference between Flexible Structural Engineer vs Structural Engineer?

AspectFlexible Structural EngineerStructural Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Civil/Structural Engineering, PE license often preferredBachelor's or Master's in Civil/Structural Engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign firms, consulting agencies, construction sites, flexible schedulesDesign firms, consulting agencies, construction sites, standard hours
Industry UsageUsed in projects requiring adaptable design solutions and innovative materialsUsed broadly across infrastructure, buildings, and industrial projects

The main difference is that a Flexible Structural Engineer specializes in adaptable, innovative design approaches and often works in dynamic environments, while a Structural Engineer typically focuses on standard structural analysis and design within established guidelines. Both roles require similar credentials but differ in project scope and flexibility.

Is there a high demand for flexible structural engineers?

Flexible structural engineers are in steady demand due to the ongoing need for adaptable and innovative building designs, especially in urban development and infrastructure projects. Skills in computer-aided design (CAD) and knowledge of modern construction materials enhance employability in this field.

What other jobs can flexible structural engineers do?

Flexible structural engineers can transition into roles such as project managers, construction managers, or design consultants, leveraging their expertise in structural analysis and design. They may also work in related fields like civil engineering, building inspection, or consulting, often utilizing skills in CAD software and engineering codes. Certifications like PE (Professional Engineer) can expand their career options in various engineering and management positions.

Job description

Structural Engineer (PE Preferred)

Itasca, IL
Compensation: $95,000 – $135,000+ (flexible based on experience & licensure)

About the Opportunity
We are partnering with a growing manufacturer specializing in custom enclosures, seeking a Structural Engineer to bring critical in-house expertise to their engineering team. This is a high-impact role where you’ll own structural validation and analysis—something the organization currently lacks internally.

If you’re looking for a role where your work directly influences product safety, design integrity, and cost efficiency, this is it.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Perform structural analysis and validation on enclosure designs prior to external PE review
  • Ensure designs meet applicable codes, safety standards, and customer requirements
  • Optimize designs for cost efficiency without compromising structural integrity
  • Collaborate closely with design and engineering teams to refine concepts
  • If licensed, stamp and approve drawings internally
What We’re Looking For
  • 5–10+ years of experience in structural engineering / design
  • Experience with structural analysis software (RISA, SkyCiv, or similar tools)
  • Background in enclosures, sheet metal structures, or similar systems is a strong plus
  • Solid understanding of structural design principles and applicable codes
  • FE/EIT required or in progress; PE license strongly preferred
Why This Role Stands Out
  • Opportunity to build and own the structural function internally
  • High visibility and influence on product safety and design standards
  • Flexibility in compensation based on experience and licensure
  • Path to become the go-to technical authority within the organization

Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, age, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or genetic information.
