Job Summary:
Heavy Equipment Operator use construction class vehicle on various job sites in all weather conditions. Heavy Equipment Operators handle motorized apparatus such as bulldozers, excavators, and front-end loaders. Varying classes of equipment operators are explained below.
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Maneuvering motorized heavy equipment to ensure the accurate removal and placement of materials.
  • Loading and offloading rocks, debris, and other materials from heavy equipment.
  • Always observe stipulated safety codes.
  • Inspecting equipment before and after use to ensure the machine stays in good working order.
  • Cleaning equipment after use and disposing of any collected scraps or waste.
  • Aid coworkers to ensure the site is clean and organized at the end of the shift.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by foreman/superintendent.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Ability to listen to, understand, and follow directions. Communicate effectively with crew members including written and spoken word.
  • Ability to remain flexible as specific assignments change.
  • Ability to work with a variety of personalities.
  • Sharp decision-making skills, particularly when under pressure.

Class Determination:
Class A Operator: Experience with Backhoe/Hydraulic Excavator ¾ yard or greater. Front End Loader (3 yards or over). Finish Dozer Operator (2-year minimum experience)
Class B Operator: Experience with Backhoe/Hydraulic Excavator less than ¾ yard, Bulldozer or Push Dozer, Front End Loader (Less than 3 yard), Rough Dozer, Scraper, Shovel, Trencher. (1-year minimum experience)
Class C Operator: Asphalt Paver, Concrete Finishing Machine, Concrete Paver, Scale, Spreader (Self-Propelled), Concrete Grinder, Asphalt Milling Machine, Boring Machine (Horizontal). Minimum 1 year experience.
Class D Operator: Bobcat, Concrete Pump, Concrete Saw, Curb Machine (Auto/Manual), Dozer or Loader (Stockpile), Drill (Piling), Mulcher or Seeder, Rock Drill (Truck Mounted), Roller (Asphalt), Roller (Compaction Self-Propelled), Soli Stabilization Machine, Tractor (Boom & Hoist), Bituminous Distributor Machine, Pump, Track Drill, Striping Machine Operator, Ditch Paving Machine. 1 year experience preferred - willing to train with prior highway construction experience as laborer or pipelayer.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas.
  • Must be able to lift and carry, push and/or pull up to 50-pound loads at a time.
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to climb on and into the equipment safely using a 3 point of contact method.
  • Able to sit for extended periods of time traveling over uneven terrain.
  • Must be able to work on Saturdays and at night, when needed. As the schedule is commonly a 6-day work week (Monday-Saturday)

Work Location
  • Must have own reliable transportation to jobsite which vary within the Metro Nashville Area and surrounding counties.
