What does a flexible nuclear electrical engineer do?

A Flexible Nuclear Electrical Engineer is responsible for designing, maintaining, and optimizing electrical systems within nuclear power plants, with an emphasis on adapting to changing technologies and operational needs. They ensure that electrical equipment and controls meet safety and regulatory standards, and may work on projects involving the upgrade or integration of flexible nuclear technologies. Their role often involves troubleshooting, system analysis, and collaborating with other engineers to support reliable and efficient plant operations. Flexibility in this context refers to the engineer’s ability to address evolving challenges in nuclear energy production, such as integrating with renewables or improving plant responsiveness.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flexible nuclear electrical engineer?

To thrive as a Flexible Nuclear Electrical Engineer, you require a strong background in electrical engineering, knowledge of nuclear power systems, and typically a bachelor's degree in electrical or nuclear engineering. Familiarity with industry-specific codes (like IEEE and NRC standards), specialized simulation software, and possibly a Professional Engineer (PE) license are crucial technical qualifications. Excellent problem-solving abilities, adaptability, teamwork, and clear communication are key soft skills that enhance performance in this role. These skills and qualifications are vital for ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of nuclear electrical systems in a highly regulated environment.

How does a flexible nuclear electrical engineer typically collaborate with other disciplines within a nuclear facility?

As a Flexible Nuclear Electrical Engineer, you will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical, civil, and control systems engineers, as well as safety and operations personnel. Collaboration is essential, as electrical systems must integrate seamlessly with other plant systems to ensure safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance. Regular coordination meetings, joint problem-solving sessions, and cross-functional reviews are common, allowing you to contribute your expertise while learning from others. This collaborative environment enhances both project outcomes and professional development.

Job description

Services 1029 N Highway 19/41 Hampton, GA 30228, USA

Job Summary

The position of Electrical Engineer I in the Service Mobile Products Group will act as the primary medium between the Electrical design, Mobile Design and Engineering, Mobile Production and Mobile Project Management. This role would serve as both the in-house conduit and lead to capture, document, communicate, advise, and receive all related electrical information that exists and changes during the scope of the project. This person will closely follow and observe how the electrical design’s intentions become realized, applied, and implemented during Mobile Production. This engineer would provide practical, everyday knowledge and expertise in both understanding and communicating the questions and issues that always arise during pre-production, production, and post-production phases, as it pertains to the electrical wiring network. This person would ensure a keen and experienced eye is always focused on the soundness of the electrical wiring and device layout, the proficiency of the implementation and the quality of the testing and evaluation. Having this person consistently involved at different steps in the process will allow for a more comprehensive and informed approach to all aspects of the Mobile electrical designs that can be difficult to fully gauge due to the complex intricacies and nuances inherent in electrical wiring execution and the sometimes-large scale of such designs.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Engineer will work alongside Mobile Engineering, before Customer Approval Drawing submittal, to consult on the best locations of HV equipment, as well as assessing the accessibility of such equipment after installation and the ease of maintenance.
  • Ensure Mobile Production has the latest and most up to date revision of the electrical drawings as revisions occur, verifying that obsolete designs are not followed.
  • Be the primary lead in receiving proposed changes to the electrical drawings and assist in evaluating the received feedback on the drawings.
  • Assist the Chief engineer/Project Manager in communicating proposed changes to the electrical drawings to the customer and assist in evaluating the received feedback on the drawings from this said customer.
  • Work with the Service Production and Engineering teams in designing the most efficient and effective layout for routing the rigid, flexible conduit before installation of such.
  • Work with the Service Production and Engineering teams in designing the most efficient and effective layout of Junction Boxes before installation of such.
  • If deviations to the electrical drawings are proposed, by either this Engineer or another, before or during Mobile Production, assist in assessing, in conjunction with Mobile Engineering and Production teams, whether this deviation is warranted and presents a safer and more effective upgrade over the current design.
  • If such deviation proposed is agreed upon by all aforementioned parties, then this engineer will lead in capturing this proposed change and revising it on the design drawings.
  • Capture and document any changes or deviations from the electrical drawings before or during Mobile Production, as it pertains to the wiring and layout of the As-built Mobile.
  • Perform point-to-point wiring tests and other related tests on the electrical wiring network of the As-built Mobile as to ensure the integrity of the electrical layout and wiring design and the functionality of the Mobile.
  • Compare the results of the point-to-point wiring tests and/or other tests to the most recent version of the electrical drawings.
  • Update the electrical drawings, via AutoCAD, as needed, to match the As-Built Mobile.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve electrical wiring/design problems during Mobile Production.
  • Assist in determining the specifications of electrical and electronic devices that warrant unexpected procurement during Mobile production, as can happen with new projects.
  • Work alongside third-party test groups, advising on the nature of the electrical layout and wiring design and answering questions raised by this test group.
  • Verify results of the third-party testing group, as it pertains to the point-to-point wiring and the electrical and electronic device layouts.
  • Assist in verifying and corroborating the electrical functionality descriptions and instructions required for entry in the Post-Production Customer User Manuals
Job Requirements
  • Minimum of 5yrs. Design in the electric power industry
  • Fundamental understanding of power systems and substation design
  • Ability to create and edit AutoCAD Electrical Drawings
  • Knowledge and experience with electrical relays, protection, and control
