What is a flexible math tutor?

A Flexible Math Tutor is an educator who provides personalized math instruction to students, often on a schedule or platform that allows both the tutor and student to choose convenient times for sessions. This flexibility can include online or in-person lessons, varying hours, and adapting teaching methods to fit each student's learning style. Flexible Math Tutors help learners build confidence and improve their math skills by offering support tailored to individual needs, making math more accessible and less intimidating.

How do flexible math tutors manage their schedules and communicate with students?

Flexible math tutors often use online scheduling tools or platforms that allow both the tutor and students to select convenient times for sessions. Clear communication is key—they usually establish preferred methods (such as email or messaging apps) to coordinate session times, share resources, and address questions between meetings. Tutors must be highly organized and responsive to adapt to students’ changing availability while maintaining consistent progress. This flexibility can also mean tutoring students from different time zones or grade levels, so setting clear expectations and boundaries is important for a balanced workload.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flexible math tutor?

To thrive as a Flexible Math Tutor, you need a solid understanding of mathematics, strong instructional abilities, and at least a bachelor's degree in math or a related field. Familiarity with digital teaching platforms, online whiteboards, and video conferencing tools is essential for remote or hybrid tutoring. Excellent communication, patience, and adaptability help tutors effectively connect with diverse learners and adjust to varying educational needs. These skills ensure students receive personalized, effective support, leading to improved understanding and academic success.

You'll be responsible for high-quality math instruction and helping set the tone and standards for the instructional team. This position is ideal for someone who is strong in math through Calculus, enjoys mentoring others, and wants to grow into a long-term role in education.

  • A college graduate (or non-traditional student) with strong math and leadership ability

If you are currently in college, you must not be dependent on student housing and must be able to work through the spring, summer, and winter breaks.
What You'll Do
  • Teach students using the Mathnasium curriculum and instructional standards
  • Model excellent teaching practices for instructors
  • Support day-to-day instructional operations during program hours
  • Help maintain a calm, focused, and productive learning environment
  • Guide instructors in pacing, explanation, and student engagement
  • Assist with individual student curriculum development
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with parents when needed
  • Step into leadership responsibility when the Center Director is unavailable

This is a trusted leadership role with real responsibility and the strong possibility of growing into a salaried full-time position.
Requirements

    • Availability Monday - Friday, 2:00-8:00 PM
    • Strong math skills through Calculus
    • Clear communication skills and professional demeanor

    • Prior tutoring, teaching, or instructional experience
    • Experience mentoring or supervising others
    • Interest in long-term growth within education
    • Experience or working knowledge of early childhood development and education

Why Work Here
  • Meaningful work with real student impact
  • Genuinely fun and engaging environment
  • Structured teaching system (no busywork or guess-and-check tutoring)
  • Paid training and instructional support
  • Clear advancement path into higher leadership or salaried roles

Compensation: $14.00 - $16.00 per hour
