Job description

Controls Engineer

Direct Hire | Brooklyn Park, MN | $90k–$110k

We are seeking a Controls Engineer to join an engineering team responsible for PLC/HMI programming, system development, startup, and troubleshooting of industrial automation systems. This is a hands-on role for an engineer who enjoys working across design, programming, commissioning, and field support.

Responsibilities

  • The Controls Engineer will develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC and HMI programs.
  • Support equipment startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
  • Develop control narratives and I/O lists from P&IDs.
  • Review customer system specifications and develop project requirements.
  • Work closely with field service teams to provide programming and technical support.
  • Assist with customer training and onsite startup activities.
  • Manage assigned projects while working within established budgets and timelines.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and meet project deadlines.
  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform other engineering duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of PLC/HMI programming experience.
  • Experience with Siemens and/or Allen-Bradley controls; Siemens experience is highly preferred.
  • Associate degree/certificate in Controls, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field; Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with engineering and field service teams.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 25%, primarily for startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer support.

Physical Requirements

This is a hands-on engineering position that may require:

  • Climbing and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and industrial equipment.
  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Reaching, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
  • Working around industrial machinery and equipment.
  • Occasionally working in high-temperature environments, including temperatures exceeding 100°F for extended periods.
