What is flexible 3d printing?

Flexible 3D printing refers to the process of creating objects using 3D printers and flexible materials, such as thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) or thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). This technology enables the production of parts that can bend, stretch, or compress while retaining their original shape. Flexible 3D printing is commonly used for making custom wearables, phone cases, shoe soles, medical devices, and other products that require durability and flexibility. The process requires specialized printer settings and compatible materials to achieve optimal results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flexible 3d printing specialist?

To thrive as a Flexible 3D Printing Specialist, you need a solid understanding of 3D modeling, materials science (especially flexible polymers), and additive manufacturing processes, often supported by technical training or a degree in engineering or design. Familiarity with CAD software, slicing programs, and various 3D printers—particularly those optimized for flexible materials—is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help ensure high-quality output and effective collaboration with clients or team members. These competencies are essential to efficiently produce complex, flexible components that meet precise specifications and industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in flexible 3d printing, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in flexible 3D printing often encounter challenges such as material compatibility, print precision, and maintaining the durability of flexible parts. It can be difficult to calibrate printers for flexible filaments, which require specialized settings and careful handling to avoid jams or inconsistent prints. Collaboration with engineers and designers is essential to refine prototypes and troubleshoot issues, while continuous learning about new materials and printer technologies helps professionals stay ahead. Building strong problem-solving skills and seeking feedback from team members can also significantly improve outcomes in this innovative field.

What is the difference between Flexible 3D Printing vs 3D Printing Technician?

AspectFlexible 3D Printing3D Printing Technician
CredentialsKnowledge of flexible filament materials, basic CAD skillsOften requires technical training or certification in 3D printing
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, manufacturing facilities, prototyping centersManufacturing plants, workshops, labs
Industry UsagePrototyping, custom flexible parts, product developmentOperating 3D printers, post-processing, quality checks

Flexible 3D Printing focuses on creating parts with flexible materials, emphasizing design and material knowledge. 3D Printing Technicians operate and maintain 3D printers, ensuring quality and functionality. While both roles involve 3D printing, flexible 3D printing is more design and material-oriented, whereas technicians focus on machine operation and production processes.

About Formlabs:
Do you want to change how the world creates?
At Formlabs, we're building the tools that make it possible for anyone to bring their ideas to life, from cutting-edge products to life-saving medical devices. Our 3D printing technology powers innovation at more than 50,000 industry leaders worldwide, including Apple, Google, Tesla, New Balance, and NASA. Together, we're helping everyone design, prototype, and manufacture faster than ever before.
We're a team of hands-on builders, engineers, and innovators reinventing how the world makes physical things. If you're ready to shape the future of fabrication, come build it with us.
Your Impact:
We're looking for a Product Marketing Manager to own marketing for our Dental business and drive adoption of our 3D printers, materials, and software across the dental industry. This is an end-to-end marketing role. You'll run the go-to-market strategy, lead new product launches, own messaging and positioning, build content, enable sales, and turn market and competitive insight into campaigns that move the business. If you're a marketing manager or product marketing manager who likes owning concurrent workstreams and seeing your work show up in clinics and labs, this is a role where strong project management and hands-on execution make a visible difference.
What You'll Do:
  • Lead go-to-market and product launches for new dental hardware, software, and materials
  • Build positioning and messaging that connects market and technology trends to dental personas and use cases
  • Partner with leadership to shape and execute the dental marketing strategy
  • Plan and run marketing campaigns across email, social media, and other digital and traditional channels
  • Own the content and strategy of the Formlabs Dental website
  • Develop high-impact content including case studies, workflow videos, website copy, and customer stories
  • Track competitors and adjust positioning as the market shifts
  • Enable direct sales teams and channel partners with sales enablement materials and co-branded campaigns
  • Promote and demo Formlabs products at conferences, trade shows, and events
  • Collaborate with dental professionals, key opinion leaders (KOLs), and cross-functional content, creative, events, sales, and product teams
  • Track, analyze, and report on campaign performance to inform future investment

About You:
  • 3+ years in product marketing, marketing management, growth marketing, or product management, ideally at a B2B hardware, software, medical device, or technology company
  • A track record of running marketing programs end to end, with strong project management and the ability to keep concurrent workstreams on track
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, with a knack for crafting clear, compelling messaging and positioning
  • Experience across digital and traditional marketing channels
  • A collaborator who partners well with sales and marketing to build training, value propositions, and differentiation
  • A creative mindset and a passion for designing campaigns that win customers
  • A bias for action: proactive, solution-driven, and able to execute quickly and anticipate challenges
  • Strong business judgment and initiative, comfortable solving strategic problems in real time
  • Curious about technology, and interested in 3D printing

Bonus Skills:
  • Experience marketing in the dental, medical device, or lab equipment industry
  • A background as a dental professional (dentist or dental technician) who moved into marketing
  • A technical, STEM, or life sciences background (a plus, not a requirement)

Our Benefits & Perks:
  • Robust equity program to build future wealth through RSUs
  • Comprehensive healthcare coverage (Medical, Dental, Vision)
  • 401K matching and access to financial advisors
  • Generous paid Parental Leave (up to 16 weeks)
  • Tenure-based paid Sabbatical Leave (up to 6 weeks)
  • Flexible Out of Office Plan, take time when you need it
  • Ample on-site parking & pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Healthy on-site lunches, snacks, beverages, & treats
  • Regular sponsored professional development opportunities
  • Many opt-in culture events across our diverse community
  • And of course, unlimited 3D prints

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
Even if you don't check every box, but see yourself contributing, please apply. Help us build an inclusive community that will change the face of 3D printing.
Compensation
We are all owners of Formlabs and direct beneficiaries of our success. We believe that equity is a critical component of compensation at Formlabs, and we want our newest team members to understand the potential value of their equity compensation. Full time employees receive equity, in the form of RSUs. Your financial investment will grow with us in accordance to your impact.
At Formlabs, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. Your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, location and expected impact on the organization.
The annual base pay range for this role is:
$85,000-$135,000 USD
