What does a flex roller compactor operator do?

A Flex Roller Compactor Operator is responsible for operating heavy machinery known as roller compactors to compress and smooth out surfaces such as soil, asphalt, or other materials, typically on construction sites. This role involves inspecting equipment before use, following safety protocols, and ensuring that surfaces are compacted to the required specifications. Operators may also perform basic maintenance on their equipment and work closely with other construction team members to complete projects efficiently.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a flex roller compactor operator?

To thrive as a Flex Roller Compactor Operator, you need a solid understanding of heavy equipment operation, safety protocols, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with compactor machinery, GPS systems, and basic maintenance tools is typically required, along with any necessary operator certifications. Attention to detail, strong communication, and the ability to work independently or as part of a construction team are standout soft skills. These abilities are essential for ensuring efficient, safe, and high-quality compaction work on construction sites.

What are common challenges faced by flex roller compactor operators on construction sites?

Flex Roller Compactor Operators often encounter challenges such as working in variable weather conditions, maneuvering heavy equipment in tight or uneven spaces, and maintaining consistent compaction quality across different soil types. Communication with other site crews is essential to ensure safety and project efficiency, especially when multiple machines are in operation. Operators must also stay vigilant about equipment maintenance to prevent breakdowns and adhere to strict safety protocols throughout their shifts.

Shift: Days

Pay: $30-40/hr. (based on experience level)

Description:

  • Cannonball Recruiting is seeking an experienced Asphalt Roller Operator for a York, PA Paving and Excavating company. This person will safely operate the heavy machinery to compact and smooth freshly laid asphalt.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of (2) years' experience operating Breakdown Roller and Finish Rollers.

  • Ability to work outdoors in various conditions.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
  • CDL is nice to have but not required; tanker endorsement is a plus

Job Duties:

  • Drive rollers (smooth drum, pneumatic tire) in overlapping passes to achieve required compaction and smoothness on asphalt and subgrade.
  • Work with the paving crew, using hand/audio signals to coordinate speed, direction, and avoid interference.
  • Monitor asphalt temperature and adjust machine settings (frequency, amplitude, water) to match mix design, thickness, and temperature for optimal compaction.
  • Conduct daily pre- and post-operation checks, fluid/water system checks, and report mechanical issues to supervisors.
  • Safely operate roller in successive overlapping passes over surfaces to be compacted, rolling asphalt to desired compaction and smoothness.
  • Determine the speed and direction of the machine, based on knowledge of compressibility of material under changing temperatures, so that ridges do not form by excessive pressure.
  • Use a hand tamp or guide portable plate compactors over areas not accessible to a road roller.
  • Operate the Breakdown roller to achieve proper compaction.
  • Operate the Finish Roller in successive overlapping passes to apply the final finish and remove imperfections with a finish roller.
  • Uphold strict safety guidelines, barricade freshly laid asphalt, and maintain awareness of surroundings and crew members.
  • Responsible for daily checks of water systems and scrapers on the drums.
  • Assist with setup/take-down, clean up, and potentially other duties as assigned.
