The Opportunity

Virginia Transformer is seeking an experienced Field Service Fleet & Asset Manager to be based in Roanoke, VA. This position will have overall responsibility for managing the vehicles, trailers, tools, equipment, and other assets supporting our Field Service organization across the United States.

This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for ensuring our field teams have the right equipment, in the right location, in safe operating condition, when they need it.

The Field Service Fleet & Asset Manager will establish and maintain strong processes for asset acquisition, utilization, tracking, preventive maintenance, repair, compliance, deployment, and replacement. The successful candidate will bring a strong sense of ownership and urgency while controlling costs and maximizing asset availability.

Key Responsibilities

Fleet Management

• Manage the Field Service vehicle fleet, including trucks, service vehicles, trailers, and other mobile equipment.
• Maintain accurate records of vehicle assignments, locations, mileage, maintenance history, inspections, registrations, and condition.
• Develop and manage preventive maintenance schedules to maximize vehicle availability and minimize unplanned downtime.
• Coordinate vehicle repairs, inspections, recalls, registrations, licensing, and other fleet requirements.
• Monitor vehicle utilization and identify opportunities to improve fleet efficiency.
• Develop vehicle replacement plans based on mileage, age, maintenance cost, condition, utilization, and operational requirements.
• Coordinate the acquisition, upfitting, deployment, reassignment, and disposal of fleet vehicles.
• Work with vendors and service providers to ensure competitive pricing, quality, and turnaround times.
• Ensure fleet operations comply with applicable company policies and federal, state, and local requirements.

Field Service Asset Management

• Manage Field Service assets including specialized tools, test equipment, generators, trailers, lifting equipment, safety equipment, and other field-service equipment.
• Establish and maintain a comprehensive asset inventory and tracking system.
• Ensure all assets have clearly identified ownership, location, condition, and maintenance status.
• Track the movement of equipment between employees, job sites, service locations, and company facilities.
• Establish check-in/check-out processes and accountability standards for company-owned equipment.
• Coordinate inspections, calibration, certification, preventive maintenance, and repairs as required.
• Identify underutilized, obsolete, damaged, or missing equipment and take corrective action.
• Maintain appropriate inventory levels while avoiding unnecessary equipment purchases.
• Develop standardized equipment packages and asset requirements for Field Service teams.

Operational Support

• Partner closely with Field Service leadership to understand upcoming projects and ensure required vehicles, tools, and equipment are available.
• Coordinate the movement and deployment of equipment to customer sites across the United States.
• Respond quickly to urgent field requirements and equipment failures to minimize disruption to customer projects.
• Work with Procurement, Finance, Operations, EHS, and other departments to support asset and fleet requirements.
• Develop contingency plans for critical equipment and fleet needs.
• Support the rapid growth of the Field Service organization by developing scalable fleet and asset-management processes.

Cost & Vendor Management

• Manage fleet and equipment operating costs, including maintenance, repairs, rentals, fuel, transportation, and replacement.
• Review spending trends and identify opportunities for cost reduction without negatively impacting field readiness.
• Negotiate and manage relationships with fleet, maintenance, rental, equipment, and transportation vendors.
• Evaluate rent-versus-buy decisions based on utilization, cost, project duration, and operational requirements.
• Assist with annual budgeting and capital planning for fleet vehicles and Field Service assets.
• Maintain accurate documentation for purchases, leases, rentals, repairs, and asset disposals.

Safety & Compliance

• Ensure vehicles and equipment are maintained in safe operating condition.
• Partner with EHS to maintain compliance with applicable DOT, OSHA, company, and customer requirements.
• Maintain required inspection, maintenance, certification, and calibration documentation.
• Ensure employees understand expectations for proper use and care of company vehicles and equipment.
• Investigate recurring equipment failures, damage, or misuse and implement corrective actions.
• Support accident, incident, and vehicle-damage reporting processes.

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Operations, Supply Chain, Logistics, Engineering, Fleet Management, or a related field preferred.
• Equivalent combination of education and significant relevant experience will be considered.

Experience

• 7+ years of experience in fleet management, equipment management, asset management, field operations, logistics, or a related function.
• Experience managing a geographically dispersed vehicle and equipment fleet strongly preferred.
• Experience supporting Field Service, utilities, electrical equipment, heavy industrial, construction, power generation, or similar operations highly desirable.
• Demonstrated experience implementing asset-control and preventive-maintenance programs.
• Experience managing fleet and equipment budgets and capital expenditures.
• Experience working with third-party maintenance, rental, transportation, and equipment vendors.
• Experience supporting rapidly growing or changing organizations is highly desirable.

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong understanding of fleet maintenance and lifecycle management.
• Strong knowledge of asset-management principles and inventory controls.
• Working knowledge of DOT and vehicle compliance requirements.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced Field Service environment.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate cost, utilization, and operational data.
• Strong vendor-management and negotiation skills.
• Proficiency with fleet-management, asset-management, ERP, or similar systems.
• Strong Excel and reporting capabilities.
• Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively with field employees, technicians, managers, executives, and external vendors.

Travel

• Ability to travel to Virginia Transformer facilities, Field Service locations, vendor facilities, and customer/job sites as required.
• Approximately 20–30% travel anticipated based on business needs.
