Job description

About the Company
At Torc, we have always believed that autonomous vehicle technology will transform how we travel, move freight, and do business.
A leader in autonomous driving since 2007, Torc has spent over a decade commercializing our solutions with experienced partners. Now a part of the Daimler family, we are focused solely on developing software for automated trucks to transform how the world moves freight.
Join us and catapult your career with the company that helped pioneer autonomous technology, and the first AV software company with the vision to partner directly with a truck manufacturer.
Meet the Team
The Software Engineer II will be a core member of the Fleet Enablement & Insights team, responsible for designing and implementing the tooling and data systems that enable Torc's fleet operations team to optimize autonomy data collection operations. This role contributes directly to the infrastructure that optimizes what the fleet collects, measures machine learning needs against data collection priorities, and validates that the resulting data is safe and usable for the autonomous truck platform. The ideal candidate is a collaborative engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about solving complex data engineering, metrics, and geospatial simulation challenges at scale. This position offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of software engineering, autonomous systems, and fleet data operations with a direct line of sight to the data that trains and validates the AV stack.
What You'll Do
  • Design, develop, and maintain Python-based tools and services that support fleet data-collection planning, metrics, and the data-readiness pipeline for the autonomous trucking platform.
  • Build and optimize internal tooling to automate route prioritization, data-collection run setup, asset tracking, and data ingestion, validation, and release workflows.
  • Develop fleet and data-collection metrics and surface them in live dashboards that let the team catch quality issues during a mission rather than after offload.
  • Contribute to map tooling that leverage simulation and topology evaluation to validate mapping updates before release.
  • Manage and maintain relational and spatial databases, ensuring data integrity, performance, and scalability across fleet, collection, and mapping datasets.
  • Leverage AWS cloud services (e.g., S3, Lambda, ECS, RDS) and Databricks to build and deploy scalable, reliable data pipelines and analytics infrastructure.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including Fleet Operations, Mapping, Perception, Localization, and Data Annotation to align data-collection capabilities with downstream consumer requirements.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies, sprint planning, and regular cross-team syncs to ensure clear communication and alignment on project goals and timelines.
  • Contribute to a culture of engineering excellence through code reviews, documentation, and knowledge sharing across the organization.
  • Identify and address technical debt, performance bottlenecks, and reliability gaps across the fleet data-collection and readiness stack.

What You'll Need to Succeed
  • Proficiency in Python with experience building production-quality tools, scripts, and services.
  • Strong proficiency with SQL for querying, transforming, and analyzing relational and analytical data.
  • Working knowledge of C++ and TypeScript, or the ability to ramp into them, for interfacing with on-vehicle/sensor code and building dashboard and internal-tooling UIs.
  • Strong database expertise, including hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and SQLite.
  • Experience with Databricks for large-scale data processing, transformation, and pipeline management.
  • Experience building metrics, analytics, or reporting pipelines that turn raw operational data into decision-ready signals.
  • Proficiency with Git and GitHub for version control, branching strategies, and collaborative code workflows.
  • Familiarity with JIRA or similar project management tools for tracking tasks, bugs, and sprint deliverables.
  • Solid understanding of software engineering fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, and system design.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field or equivalent experience.

Bonus Points
  • Experience with simulation systems and their application to validating spatial, mapping, or sensor data.
  • Experience with data visualization or dashboarding tools (e.g., Databricks dashboards, Plotly, Grafana) for operational metrics.
  • Familiarity with PostGIS for advanced spatial queries, geometry operations, and geospatial data management.
  • Prior experience working with High-Definition (HD) maps, map formats (e.g. OpenDRIVE, NDS, Lanelet2), or map production pipelines.
  • Experience with routing or optimization algorithms (e.g. weighted route planning, coverage optimization).
  • Background in autonomous vehicles or machine learning, with an understanding of how fleet data collection feeds the machine learning stack.
  • Contributions to open-source geospatial, data engineering, or mapping projects.
